I'm wondering how many scoville units is the Daging Rendang at Tempoe Doeloe. See their menu at: http://www.tempodoeloerestaurant.nl/en2.htm

Don't know that, but can tell you that the Sateh Kambing is one of the hottest things I've ever eaten in my life, although if done properly following their guidance it is most tasty.

That is one of my favorite restaurants in the world and the owner is wonderful (usually I just ask him to recommend a main course), as are the rest of the staff. Good to see they finally have a website and my mouth is already watering at the thought of a return visit.

Whenever I travel I try to find someplace unique to eat. ...generally I will look for a place that servers a 'national' food.

Last year I was in the silicon valley and found a Singapore/Malaysian restaurant. I asked my waiter what his recommendation was.... he didn't speak enough english to do anything but take the most basic order.... he got another waiter.... same problem... finally the owner comes out. The guy sits down with me, we talked for a bit about what I did and didn't like. Then he starts sending out food to me. I had a sampling of traditional singapore/malaysian appetizers, an incredible fish entree and a desert. ... all for the price of the entree.

My mouth is watering just thinking about that fish...

....or is it the memory of my trip to the Prive in Amersfoort LOL!!!

Anyday,

The first message has a link to their website which includes the menu. It is a nice place and one of my favorites in the world. Slightly upscale, but not overly. Maybe 25ish tables and great food.

Hmmm...hadn't noted that. I don't think of it as either cheap or outrageous, but judge for yourself and bear in mind my usual hazy/hungry state of mind.

Here's the write-up on Frommer's where it says mains are Euro 14-31, the ristafel is Euro 27-35 and the fixed price menu is 27-43:

http://www.frommers.com/destinations/am ... 36334.html

It is always full though and takes tables relatively late for Amsterdam, as I've seen them seat people after 10 p.m.

Thanks on the name. It's actually the catch phrase of one of my favorite sportcasters (American football) who anytime there was a big play, moment or ahead of a big game would say something like "Whoooooaaaa Nellie, this is going to be a real barnburner of a game today."

I love Tempoe Doeloe and I'm pleased to see that this thred has turned some people on to them. Frankly, Tempoe serves up some of the best Indonesian food on the planet - so, so yummie and the staff are most excellent in their hospitality. The prices are not cheap; but they're not too expensive either - just right!

As for the original post... I suppose that I was hopeing beyond any real hope to get an answer/opinion.

Sounds Great!
What is their address?
I grew up in Texas and learned to love hot Mexican food. What is hot to Europeans is just right for me.

I'd like some info on the hotness here too.

I'm a huge fan of indian food, but I've never tried Indonesian. Can anyone suggest how the Daging Rendang would compare to a typical British Vindaloo or Phaal in terms of hotness? I usually don't stretch to a Phaal, although I once had a curry called "Satan's Ashes", which was one step above the Phaal. Thoroughly enjoyed it but took me ages to eat and I don't know if I'd want to repeat it!

Anyway, I'll definitely give this place a try in the coming weeks.

Having recently experienced one of Tempo Doeloe's hottest dishes (not sure if it's the one you referred to or not) and also having some experience with Quaker Steak & Lube's Atomic Wings, I would have to say that it's in the 6 digit range - 100,000 to 250,000 Scoville - which is what the Atomic Wings are rated.
