Hey guys, does anyone have any suggestions on something to do as a solo traveller whilst waiting for the night shift to kick in, say between 8pm and 11pm?? Looking to pass a few hours but on my own I dont fancy just sitting in a coffeeshop / bar. Looking for something close to the RLD.
Many thanks in advance

Hi dam,

Just a suggestion : have a good dinner (there are lots of restaurants around RLD, especially in Warmoesstraat -I can highly recommend the Old Quarter located at number 22 - very friendly staff and very good food), take a pint (many locations again), and why not a show at Moulin Rouge/Casa Rosso/La Vie en Rose ?

Cheers.

I sat in bars mostly but I know you mentioned you don't want that. It's not so much the drinking, but ended up chatting away to other lone travellers at the time too which is cool. I let them be the ones who initiated the girl chat tho to see what they were about.

Hello Dam86: Your time frame is just about tapas/happy hour/dinner time, hence the restaurants and bars are where everybody is. How about a movie at the Pathe Tuchinsky up by the Muntplein? If you have not yet seen the spectacular zaal 1 screen, you should knock that one back right away.

I used to love to just sit on one of the benches by the Munt tower in the evenings. Once or twice a week there will be a carillon concert coming from the world class carillon in the tower. Of course I was always quite roasted while enjoying this entertainment. In such a state I would also enjoy games like "find your left foot".

On some days the museums may have late hours and entertain you. In addition to the usual suspects, try the Bijbels museum (Prinzengracht?) It has a wonderful back yard since their re-do several years ago and is beautiful. It will be deserted unless there is a free chamber music concert, in which case, you lucked out. Check out the unusual ancient Egyptian stuff there, including mummy heads.

There was a little calendar magazine (day by day?) available in the tourist areas. In with the tourist dreck there would be some really cool stuff, like a back yard tour put on by some homeowners association that I will never forget.

In that time frame it would actually be possible to shag your butt out to Schipol, take the stairs to the observation deck and watch planes take off. My fave non-rld things to do are sounding a little dumb to me at the moment, but whatever. I actually haven't been to AMS since 2006, and I miss it badly.

I'm quite picky, but I can usually find girls worth visiting between 8.00 and 11.00.

Take the time to go to the Arena area. See it at the IMAX.

Pathe Arena & IMAX
Arena Boulevard 600 Amsterdam 1101 DS 0900-1458

Also those Pathe theaters will be showing all 3 films - Batman Begins, The Dark Knight and Dark Knight Rises - in a Batman marathon starting at midnight Thursday night.

I have my reservation (not in Amsterdam).

I think some might have Dutch subtitle but it's a good thing most know how to speak English so they will not over dub the speaking on the big blockbusters I think.

I've only visited the Pathe cinemas, at Muntplein and the wonderful Tuschinski. They often list the films with either OV or NL in the title. OV means original language (might have Dutch subtitles). NL I think means dubbed. Usually kids films. The absence of either OV or NL in the title I think also means original language. Maybe without subtitles?
