Hey all,

For most (if not all) of my Amsterdam trips I tend to go alone and unless meeting a forum member will eat alone.
Is it just me that finds the whole experience of dining alone really awkward?

Anyone got any good places to go to alleviate this problem? Ignoring the obvious wok to walk and burger bar (still 2 of my favourites!!)

Thanks :)

Queens cafe, round from Oude kerk on Warmestraat (sp) it has a green canopy. They show sports mist of the time, at lot of football so a good chill out place. Free wifi as well.

I always eat alone. In Warmoestraat you will find Dirty Nellies pub. That's a good place for eating alone.

Any restaurant where you can eat at the bar is conducive to solo dining. Plus, you can chat up other people at the bar. My standard answer to this question is always Castell's Bar Be Cue on Lijnbahnsgraacht, just off Leidseplein. Half the restaurant is bar and counter seats.

I can think of a few more:
Thai Bird, or if it isn't packed, Thai bird snack bar across the street , both on Zeedijk
Cafe Wau, also on Zeedijk
Most of the places on Zeedijk seem to be comfortable seating just one if it isn't packed.

De Bekeerde Sisters on Wagplein

If you are in the Jordan,
t'Zwantje on Berenstraat,
Cafe Prins on Prinsengracht
Oma's on Prinsengracht

I would't worry about it. It seems pretty common here.
I think most people traveling solo hit the quick in-and-out places on Warmostraat or Damstraat,
but it is nice to get something better once and a while.

i'd say i've eaten alone more times in Amsterdam than i have with people. couldn't care less, and noone bats an eyelid.

Cafe De Klos near Leidseplien is good cos you can sit at the bar.
De Bekeerde Suster (as Weasel suggested), its a massive pub, with loads of tables, good beer and food. its great, eat and drink alone there a lot.

theres an italian i always go in at the top of Warmoestraat - never an issue on my own. Same with cafe Peppino in Leidseplien.

obv you mentioned Burger Bar - theres also a place called Pasta Pasta not far from there which is ok.

just enjoy it. chat with the bar staff (most bar staff i've met in amsterdam are very friendly), take a book, have a beer and just soak in the atmosphere!

Just around the corner from Voyagers Coffeeshop/Hotel, there's a great place called Cafe Batavia - nice brown cafe vibe with a great selection of beers, good food, and a smoking room downstairs where you can enjoy all the above at the same time.

In the summer time, the big smoking room windows are open and you can almost reach out and dip your hand in the canal (not that I'd recommend that, but..)

Nice place to sit and chill with a cold drink, some excellent hot food, and a fat spliff, before heading back into the RLD for some more entertainment...

;)

I love Joselito tapas (joselito.nl), a real spanish place with a friendly staff, cat, and Estrella beer from Barcelona, easy to find on the corner of Nieuwendijk (2) and the Singel, it can get packed during usual meal times so consider a reservation.

Being a solo traveler, I always eat alone. Doesn't bother me at all if people stare. If you are feeling particularly lonely you can always get a beautiful escort to accompany you before heading back to the hotel.

I normally travel alone.I find the travel part and the eating parts the most lonely time.

I Genrally eat very badly when I'm on holidays I did really like the Chinese nam kee and the burger bar.IVe had far to many Big Macs in amsterdam it's nice to sit and eat a nice meal.I find the kebab shops around the Wallen really bad there pizza slices are quite nice though.

Paying a escort to have dinner with you I've never really got that.It must be a nice feeling though if you know your going to have sex with her after.

Maybe there is a line there for a buisness sit with our girls while you eat lol.

Just on the edge of the RLD there is PieMinister, Oude Hoogstraat 29, 1012 CD Amsterdam.
Very informal, just walk in off the street and view the food available, eat in or take away, they sell alcohol and there is a decent toilet too - prices are fair and the quality good. A mixture of customers from solo to small groups
I find that it is just the right comfort fodder to soak up the odd beer and rest the feet before more moochin

Cheers,
Mr. M

For lunch on my day-trips I usually go to the places a few people mentioned above e.g. burger bar, pasta pasta and if I'm really short on time then maybe generic fast-food places like McDonalds. I was in pasta pasta yesterday, it doesn't feel awkward at all eating alone in there. They have tables beside where the chef/waiting staff work who are quite happy to chat.

Whenever I have stayed a night or two, I usually try to get a decent dinner somewhere (good food is needed for all that physical activity lol) and just head into any smallish restaurant in the Wallen area as long as they are not super busy. I used to feel a bit awkward doing this on my first few trips but now I don't care anymore. The only thing I dislike about this is that it can be really boring :(

I've eaten with a girl a few times but only because we were hungry (long session) and was nothing fancy - just went and got a take-away.

Some of you suggested places at Leidseplein... how do you get there? Is it walkable or do you take the tram?

Hi,

Leidseplein is not too far from Rembrandtplein which is already not too far from CS. Generally I used to do walks between Zeedjik then Muntplein (two streets from Reguliersbreestraat with Tuschinski Movie Theatre and Cinema B1), towards Vijzestraat and then crossing again with Prinsengracht and finally you're arrived after a 20/25 minutes walk (without walking fast from CS). No Tram or cycle for me. But I do like to walk. Especially during evening/nights in Amsterdam with some fresh air breeze.

You also have another possibility : once outside CS, following Nieuweuzidjs Voorburgwal until you cross Spuistraat. You'll find Koningsplein and after Leidsestraat. Soon after it's Leidseplein.
