Not sure if this is the right forum appologies if its not, I'm gonna be wanting to rent a hire car in early September flying into the Dam on a Wednesday going to pick up the car on a Thursday and return on Monday plan on visiting parts of Germany and Belgium. Just wanted to know if anyone could recommend a local hire car hire company or am I just better off renting from one of the larger Chains.

Friends and I have rented from Hertz (airport and other locations) and Sixt, which has a location within easy walking distance from Centraal Station.

Pretty much the same as renting a car anywhere else

I have found it cheaper to rent cars before leaving home (North America) rather than renting a car in Holland which I find to be expensive.

You can do a search on their web-sites. Also check Expedia.

Some credit cards negate you having to buy extra insurance, which is sometimes equal to the cost of the rental rate effectively doubling it.

If you reserve, rent and pay from home (before you leave), you will get a voucher which you then use at the car rental company in Holland.

Hertz, Avis, Enterprise all do this.

If you want local Adams and Sixt are your best bets.

If you want to pick up your car downtown, Sixt has been the easiest for me.
Agree with Roland that it is cheaper to make all reservations and payments before entering the Netherlands.
You pay a surcharge to pick up at the airport.
Some downtown locations (but not all) also charge extra.
Most convenient is Sixt in the underground garage just east of Centraal Station.
Cheapest and best selection has been the Sixt south of town by the A10.

Cheers guys booked through cartrawler will be getting a car from Europacar in overtoom for €8 a day cheaper than if I booked directly through their own website.
