Hi,

Are all the windows in Bethlemsteeg 1-6 which are the first ones closed now ?
And do the girls have news about working on other places and streets, such as OZA or somewhere else in the main RLD ?

You beat me to it... This was the first agenda item for the new years.

As far as I know there are no plans to close that indoor section. Again if they did it would be a shame. The city has been using the so-called "trafficking" as an excuse to close more windows. In reality closing windows does absolutely nothing to address any problems of human trafficking.

It's not about trafficking and it never was. It's about idealogy. They just officially made prostitution de facto illegal here in Canada last month. We now use the Nordic model.

The Nordic Model, if you are not aware, criminalizes the purchase, but not the sale, of sex. The law was designed to be gender neutral, on paper aimed at men and women equally, but practically speaking, the law targets men almost exclusively. The law has its roots in Sweden, the brainchild of radical feminists. Essentially, the belief is that all prostitutes, by virtue of their profession, are victims of sexual violence by men whether they consider themselves to be or not. All forms of sex work are simply a way for men to exert their dominance over women, and legalized prostitution is essentially institutionalized patriarchal oppression.

I am not making this up. Do some research, it's pretty shocking.

So, the thing is, you now have a mix of radicals pushing an agenda, and stupid people who actually listen to them and don't bother to try to rationally analyze anything. The result is emotionally-charge, kneejerk, reactionary politics. I've talked to several lawyers and politicians about this issue here in Canada personally, and none of them even considered the possibility that some women willingly choose to be sex workers and this law infringes on their right to do that until I pointed it out. They seemed genuinely surprised by the notion.

The narrative simply doesn't go in our favor on this one. Most people know nothing about prostitution beyond what they see in movies, so it's not difficult to convince them that prostitution is evil and the men who patronize these women are monsters. Unfortunately, the vast majority of people who are passionate enough about this issue to actually attempt to enact policy changes are the ones who are against it.

I'm not sure what can be done here. In the case of Amsterdam, we can only hope that in the near future, people are elected who have a somewhat more sensible stance on this issue.

Yes, they're closed.

Don't know about all the girls, but the girl that used to work in the 1st window (I think her name is Silvia), I saw her today on St. Annendwarsstr. 1-3.

I'm sure most of the other girls have found another place to work as well.

Fear not regarding the new Canadian experiment, as it is not being enforced by the Provinces or municipalities. It is a ridiculous Federal law and will either be repealed by a new government or struck down by the Supreme Court.

I sure hope you're right about that. It doesn't really affect me personally, as I don't really use escorts at home, only when I travel, but it's absolutely one of the most dangerous, ill-conceived pieces of legislation this country has ever produced.

I honestly thought after the Supreme Court struck down the old laws in 2013, things would finally get better for sex workers in Canada. That the Harper government would use that as an opportunity to push their political agenda like this is deplorable and a complete mockery of justice.
