Hi my first flight was Southend to Amsterdam for the speed and ease of the journey.IM a very short distance from southend airport.

I never feel Totaly safe on a flight as it is Totaly out of my hands.I know there is more accidents in every other form of travel strange really.I will always fly over to Europe now but never really enjoy.

What's your thoughts on flying would you rather use other methods.I like the journey more with the ferry from harwich but the time is a lot more.

i absolutely detest the experience but i never let it stop me going from A to B. my first flight was to amsterdam, back in 2010. i've done longer flights now as well (thailand) but it's definitely not a form of travel that i enjoy.

it is definitely the lack of control that gets me - like your life is totally out of your hands. which is ridiculous, because everytime you get into a car, bus or train it is exactly the same.

I hate flying, not because I'm afraid, but because we suck at it. You'd think after all this time, we'd be able to find a way to make flying not horrible, but seemingly we have not.

You go to the airport, submit yourself to silly, invasive security that doesn't actually do anything, then get herded onto a plane like cattle and crammed in like sardines. Often, you get little kids or people with screaming babies. It's like being stuck in a slum in Calcutta for several hours. And for the privilidge of being subjected to this bullshit, you get to pay thousands of dollars, plus be subjected to all sorts of extra fees if your bags are too heavy or some shit.

KLM is about the best airline I've ever flown, but even with them, the experience is less than pleasant. I fly first class when I can, which alleviates some of the discomfort, I'm a tall guy, so I likes my leg room, but that's often not feasible. I would never fly if I had the choice, but coming from Canada, it's not really very viable to get to Amsterdam any other way.

I absolutely love flying, sorry to be in the minority here.
50 mins from LGW-AMS or 45mins from LHR-AMS
Although i suffer from vertigo very badly, i can happily look out of the window with no palpations, but put in a hotel higher than the 2nd floor, i completely lose it
2 years ago, i went round the world business class [ im tall as well] and flew BA/QANTAS/AA and UNITED and loved every second of it
Cant wait to fly again
regards

I have a bad fear of heights but flying does not bother me too bad. Mostly it is just uncomfortable. I kind of view it like swimming in the ocean. Yea I am not too scared of sharks and the likelyhood is low but man oh man will it suck if it happens to me. I am an athiest and I think once you die the computer gets shut off . In that sense death does not scare me but dying does i.e. Being shredded by a shark or plummeting from 30,000 feet.

I'd love to take a ferry, but it would take weeks, and I get seasick with any rough weather!
It doesn't seem to affect me when I fly.
Air travel used to be so much better. People were polite and respectful, stewardesses were pleasant ant helpful.
It went bad when Eastern and Pan Am went out of business. KLM, SAS, and even Lufthansa are still tolerable, but United and Delta are horrid.
If it makes you feel better, things could be worse. I've flown all over the world on military aircraft. You can't imagine the conditions. And I will NEVER get in another helicopter as long as I live!

I had a strict aerofobia for more than 7 years in the past. I guess it had many reasons - something from the childhood, as long as modern accidents also effected me...
So I travelled by trains. From very far eastern Europe to Paris, Amsterdam, even Madrid... It took up to 3 days one way)) It's not like travelling from London to Amsterdam via Paris in a few hours))
I knew I should change something in my life, cause I love travelling and with trains only, my options are very limited. So after about a year of inner prepairation I managed to step on board of the plane (with few failed attemps before - tickets and money lost)). It was very mportant to make a first step.
Now I fly over 90 segments per year. I realize that the more you fly - the easier it is.
Even now I feel nervious sometimes... when it's long-lasting turbulence, or when passengers around me close all the windows)) But then I can think of going for more than 40 hours to Amsterdam from my place for example instead of 3 hours flight - I realize that those nerves are the minority.
I guess it's in a human nature to feel nervious when being in unusual conditions. It's not about real safety, which level is extremely high nowadays.
So my advice is - don't get your nerves too serious and have a nice flight!))

If it's that bad that you have to take trains for days and days your advice is great. I did the same. Fly as much as you can and often it will go away. At least some of the anxiety. That did it for me. And I thought about all the fun I just had, and that I would miss the opportunity sitting at home being afraid of it.

Still don't like flying but skipping the Amsterdam trips is now not an option. Next I will also be trying other fun places.

Amsterdam in the middle of december was a rough last 10 minutes before landing. 25 meters pr. second winds. Rollercoaster ride from hell, but the captain landed smooth like a champ. KLM is the best.

Hate flying. Used to do the high speed ferry from Harwich but when that service stopped switched to Eurostar/Thalys. Love it. Book early enough and the price is reasonable. 5 hours door to door. Like to spend a couple of hours in Brussels on the way home.

Yes I have done the Eurostar and the trains.I also do a stopover in Brussels so it's just one train a day.Normally I think with 3 months to your travel dates the seats start to sell so if you get in quick Eurostar is cheap £69.Remember once the high speed train stop somewhere near antwerp there was a power cut all off.I share a taxi with 4 other people going to brussels.Missed my train at Eurostar but they just put me on the next one and upgraded me to 1st class got the dinner and everything. Not a bad way to travel.
