Non touristy looking rental bikes

The last few trip I've rented from OrangeBike. Not the least touristy looking bikes but DEFINITELY not the most looking either and it's conveniently located to the areas I like to sleep and party in.

The last time I rented from them (Nov 2014) my friend and I went to return them on our last day there, which I believe was on a Sunday. When we got to the shop in the morning they were closed, even though it was during the hours of operation they had listed on their webpage. I see this as their problem not mine.

We locked our bikes at the front of the shop and headed to the airport. 2 days later I received a phone call from them asking why I hand't returned the bikes. I'm afraid they will hassle me if I try to rent from them again.

I leave for Amsterdam tomorrow evening and arrive at 7am on Friday morning. Can you guys recommend a new place/s for me that fits my description in the subject of this thread?

City bikes are ok BUT I actually like to cross the river to the north behind Central Station to do some longer rides so if you know of any that do road bikes please let me know.

Thanks
DB

Frederic's rents normal, local looking bikes with no ads or neon paint.
On the Brouwersgracht canal, near Sibarie coffeeshop, a block south of Harlemmerstraat.
The guy that does the repairs and hands out the bikes has all the charm of a deranged serial killer, so be forewarned. They have a lot of bikes, and might have something a little sportier for longer distance.
I've been renting from City Bikes across the street from the Westkerk for a few years. Small ads on yellow tapes on the frame, but the bikes are less expensive and more reliable. Nina, the lady that runs it, is very nice, and has not threatened to sodomize me with a wrench, unlike the guy at Frederic's.

Best place is to rent in my opinion is from BvD Tweewielers.

Here http://www.bvdtweewielers.nl

They have 5 locations including one in Zuid (near Museumplein) on Rudolf Hartplein and another a block from the Albert Cuyp market.

Bikes "fit-in" really well and don't stand out.

They will be sized for your needs and will come with a great lock as well as a post lock.

Regards, Roland

Mr. Greenoff,

I think it would be fun to fill you up with beer and send you off down the street on a bike.
I promise not to laugh, no matter what the result, but I will be posting video here.
I can't recommend biking enough. There is a reason all the locals do it.
You can get anywhere in the city in just a few minutes, at any hour day or night.
I've only had one accident (not my fault, a bewildered Canadian woman stepped right into the bike lane while taking pictures), so it can't be that dangerous.
On the plus side, you cannot imagine the thrill of cruising along the canals, drunk, stoned and freshly relieved by one of my favorite girls. Priceless!

Well-fucking-said!!!!!!!!!!!

I've been to Amsterdam 10 times or so and it wasn't until trip number 7 that I started renting a bike. Better late than never I guess but its a god damn shame it took me this long to do it.

You are a wicked man Mr.Weasel !!!! lol
Dont mind the bit about filling me up with beer, but sending me down a street on a bike ? NO !!!!
I have a job walking when im pissed, let alone riding a bike
but...............
on the other hand, that could work to my advantage my friend.........
Scenario
Mr.Weasel gets me drunk, sends me off on a bike, blonde female politie arrests me, handcuffs me for being drunk on a bike, takes me to the politie cells, and ............................ !!
Yep, im up for this LOL
regards

Ah, the happy ending to all Mr. Greenhoff's trips.
The arrest and cavity search by the blonde Politie!
You know, we both know a girl that will jump right to the search part, without either of us having to go to the trouble of getting arrested. She has her own handcuffs and riding gear, too!
To be honest, I would still rather see you weaving down the cobblestones, crash into a canal, and be pulled out by the authorities.
You can tell them it was all my fault.
See how far that gets you.

I bought a bicycle here for my last trip.

Recycled Bicycles
Spuistraat 84A
1012 TX Amsterdam
Netherlands

I paid 75 euro and the guy bought it back at the end of the week for 35 euro. I had it for the whole week, went anywhere I wanted and I could have left it with someone or lost it ......didn't matter! It was a great bike in great shape. I recommend this place. Why rent when you can buy!

Fats,

I've always wondered about buying.
I almost did it once, but was warned that the bike was almost certainly stolen.
A real business with a solid address seems safer.
Did you get a lock and a light in the deal, or did you have to buy your own?
