I have been thinking about making a purchase on a rental property in AMS. If I am a Brit what are the limitations to ownership of property in the Netherlands?

I have looked many times, and over many years, at the prices of real estate in Amsterdam, and legally there may be nothing stopping you, but you will have to either have a large amount of credit, or a large amount of Eruos to purchase property in Amsterdam. Amsterdam property prices are close to the other most expensive cities in the world.

But I do wish you good luck, and I'd love to come for a visit when you secure a place. I'd even suggest a nice view of the Amstel, say around The Doelen Hotel. Let us know how your search goes. I envy you as I miss the city more and more since my last visit!

Hi Zack,

I appreciate the post. I realize the costs are high. We are looking at 300,000 to 500,000 for a nice top floor flat on one of the canals. I have an appointment with an agent there in 2 weeks and I will learn more.

I think we are looking either later in the year or even possibly next year so we are just starting our investigating. I am not sure what the process is in AMS but I'm sure we will learn more later this month.

Apon my return I will post what info I find.

Thanks for the info Smokley these are some of the areas I still need to learn more about. I will mention them both to the realtor. I will also look into the Westerpark area, great lead.

Sounds like you have the means, and I wish you good luck in your search. And yes, please post what you find as you go along. People have always asked if I plan to buy a second home in Amsterdam since I go so often. Always thought is was too expensive to have a second home costing what the first home costs. Nice to know there are those who can do it though.

Also, you might even consider renting it sometimes to close friends on the board (you know, like me!:)) Just kidding. Anyway, good luck and keep us posted.
