hello people

im planning my first trip to amsterdam and i have been searching past posts, but cant seem to find any relating to how long it takes to walk from the RLD to vondel park. im staying at the hotel vijaya, oudezijds voorburgwal 44. and its hard to estimate the walking time by looking at a map of a place where you have never been before. so if anyone has any idea how long it takes to walk from the vijaya to vondel park it would be a great help to me and much appreciated. also just wanted to say that i have gotten some really great information of this site and im sure it will help me out a great deal when i hit amsterdam.

thanks MADVILLIAN

It obviously depends on how fast you walk, but you should be able to go from the RLD to Vondel Park in around 30 to 35 minutes.

Newcomers to Amsterdam should heed Smokely's advice. It took us years to realize that "you don't have to follow the canal". On a recent walk from Damrak to Waterlooplein (which used to take us forever) we began estimating that in 20 years of trips we'd probably walked 300 km out of our way by following the canals. Keep your destination in mind and walk straight towards it. You'll have to jog left or right here and there but you'll save loads of time and shoe leather.

I agree with you wholeheartedly ABC, when walking. But if you're on two wheels, I think the big grachts are surely the most scenic, easy to follow routes to go "cross-town"!

Just bear in mind that the centre of Amsterdam is basically a spider's web.
Make sure you carry a detailed map.

Also be alert to street name changes on some corners.

A map is useful, but you also need a pocket compass. Well I do. After a few twists and turns (and smokes) I can't trust my sense of direction. Given a known junction, a street map and a compass I can point myself in the right direction however stoned I am.
You also need a small torch at night to read the map and compass.
