Hi,
Got a sudden opportunity to go and was wondering about what goes on on Christmas day? I arrive at 6am and wanted to spend Christmas day, with some fine buds. Also what else may be open?

Thanks,
Al

It will be noticeably quieter on Christmas day (plus Christmas is on a Sunday) but there will be sufficient places open so no worries. Many of the restaurants offer a Christmas dinner as well. Regards. Roland

Thanks. I'm sure we'll have a great time. Does anything happen in DAM square(decorations, festivities?) Staying at hotel Victoria. Arriving very early and trying to find if any coffeeshops will be open Dec. 25th.

Thanks,
Al

I would like to recommend the Gregorian Chants at the Church next to tghe Barbizon which would be across the street from you (at the Victoria). Usually at 5:00 pm.
On Tweede Kerstmas (2nd Christmas or Boxing Day) there is a concert at the Westerkerk that combines a 30 or 40 voice choir and a 30 or so piece symphony. They lock the doors after the start time (usually 10:00 am) so don't be late. It is an incerdible event. Check though on the actual time. Then after the concert go to the brown cafe across the bridge (same side as the church) and have an uitsmyter (ham met kaas) and a coffee. Regards. Roland

well i was there last christmas day and dutch flowers was open at the usual time as was the bakery right across the alley from it. It's on the Singel Canal about a block or so west of the Albert Hijn grocery store next to the flower markets. The bakery across the alley from dutch flowers is Fantastic. Opens about 8 am or 9 am, They make a raspberry cake tart with fresh whipped cream on the top, cappuchinos, and these different kinds of seasonal christmas dutch pastries that are popular around then. Very affordable breakfast, around 3,50 Euro for the tart with the whipped cream and a cappuchino. A nice way to pass the time until Dutch Flowers opens around 9am or so.

I don't know about everywhere but it seemed like almost everywhere was open for christmas day except maybe a few hours later than normal if even that.

and while you're there go down to dam square and have a look at the christmas tree they set up in front of the royal palace. last year it was a great tree, perhaps 30-35 feet tall. a few of the girls wear santa claus themed outfits when they work christmas day.

right, the first one was terrible but then there was so much grumbling about it that that radio station Noordzee 100.7 FM put up a much nicer one to replace it!
