What is the state of sales of weed to non-citizens in the far south Netherlands? At one point coffeeshops were requiring memberships and you had to be a citizen...or some such. An attempt to appease the Germans, and we all know how well that works. (IT'S A JOKE!)

Anyway, starting at the southern border, how far north would someone with an American passport have to go to buy weed in the Netherlands?

Did some looking around and found this map. http://www.coffeeshopnieuws.nl/index.php/dutch-coffeeshop-tourist-tolerance-map-by-municipality

Posts seem to confirm some shops in the south are selling to non-Dutch, but many also say the quality is terrible in those towns. If I can't get any better info I may have to spend a day driving and finding out the real answer by trial and error.

Was in Geleen yesterday & popped into the Genesis Coffeeshop @ Rijksweg Zuid 88.

It's about 20 km north of Maastricht & there were no problems whatsoever purchasing as a foreigner.

Sittard has 2 shops and both are open to non Dutch. 15 minute train ride north of Maastricht. Both shops very near the station and both have quality gear.

Cool! Now I have a choice of locations. Thanks!

(Not so sure about using the train though. I've heard they will run sniffer dogs through on the German side of the line. Will likely drive a rental up from Germany.)

I'm about a week away from starting my 4 month adventure in Germany, and within days of arrival I plan on picking up some supplies.

Any updates as to coffeeshop sales in the far south to those coming up from Germany?

Also, what's the current status in terms of German police stopping returning cars expected to have been in NL for weed?

Bringing weed across the border to Germany is a really bad idea. Especially if you have a foreign license plate. I crossed the border like 14-15 times and have been controlled like 9-10 times. Maybe I was just unlucky. But the risk is too high. Don't know where exactly I germany you are going to stay but finding weed shouldn't be a bug problem in larger cities.

By the way, we have great red light districts, brothels, and fkk-clubs over here, but whatever you do, stay away from the Reeperbahn girls.. chances of beeing ripped of there are about 95%

I know Germany pretty well, but not the specifics of the border crossing practice. When I've driven from Amsterdam to Frankfurt I'd usually cross the border near Arnhem. That's further north, but I don't recall seeing anyone being stopped at all. In fact, I don't recall seeing any gates or other enforcement infrastructure.

If you don't mind providing some detail, where were you and how was the border control enforced? Did they block the road and stop every car, or chase you down with lights flashing, or ... ?

Thanks!

So the feedback I've gotten (here, in private messages, and elsewhere) has been mixed to say the least. From this I have to assume there is some finite possibility of being stopped and caught. If my situation were different that might be a tolerable risk. However, because I'm here on a long term work assignment if there was anything like a pot bust that would torpedo my visa application (or use) I would probably be fired. Without explaining why, given my professional situation that would be a HUGE deal. It would basically devastate my entire life.

So even if the risk is tiny, the penalty is so great that I've decided to not chance it.

(When I did it in the past being caught wouldn't have been detected by my employer, and even if it had, and even if I had been fired back then, it wouldn't have been nearly the big deal it would be now.)

Actually I think having German registration would be the problem. German authorities are mostly looking for Germans returning from the Netherlands. And if you look hard enough you can find references to stops and inspections pretty far north. Just not worth even a small risk for me at this point. In fact I'd be better off buying it on the street in Bonn to the extent that that wouldn't be a smuggling charge, just simple possession resulting in little or no sanctions.

So today I drove from Antwerp to the NRW via the E34/A40. It crosses the border near the dreaded Venlo where stops are supposedly the most likely.

Frankly I couldn't even tell where the border was. I just noticed that suddenly the signs were in German. The highway was packed with not only cars but high a density of semi-trailer trucks all traveling at high speeds. How they would block that in the middle of the day to look for weed I can't imagine.

The only thing I can figure is that they might pull over the occasional car by riding up on them with lights flashing. Still not worth the risk of a career implosion for me...but it's really frustrating when it looks so harmless.

Why not cross the border on public transport? You can take a standard city bus from Maastricht to Aachen and cross the border incident free. I have taken this bus ride tens of times. On one occasion the bus was stopped and all passengers had to show ID. No one was searched.

Also on the bus you can place the stash away from you and have some plausible deniability in case shit hits the fan and they board the bus with a drug sniffing dog. I would suggest keeping all your gear well sealed in a small bag pack which you place in the overhead compartment a couple of seats away from you. Don't have anything in that bag that can tie you to it. I'd say this will bring your risk pretty much down to zero.

PS. The bus stops in 5-7 cities between Maastricht and Aachen with many people getting on and off. It takes about 40 minutes.

PPS. You can even be more of a stealthy ninja and get off the bus in Gulpen (leaving the gear onboard) and take a car or taxi to Aachen where you can reboard the bus, since it has a few stops in Aachen. You need to take the bus once to familiarize yourself with the route. You would have enough time since the bus driver takes a 7 min break in Gulpen. I don't however think this is needed, as the first solution is very safe too.

Nice suggestion, and I appreciate the effort, but it sounds like a 3+ hour project that way. I guess weed just doesn't mean that much to me anymore. If it's not easy I'm not all that interested.

I am confident you will be able to get good weed in any large German city. That's definitely easier, nearer, and almost certainly cheaper than NL.
