Walking the Red Light Districts |
|
In the Red Light Districts of Amsterdam you will find, on any given day, hundreds of girls offering sex for money. Nowhere else on earth are the women so straightforwardly on display, sitting sparingly attired on stools behind windows. Nowhere else except in the other main Dutch cities, because this conspicuous window prostitution is distinct to the Netherlands, as distinct as the habit that many... [Read more] |

Oaksterdam, California? Christ, spare us from your ignorant cliches!
This idiot CNN reporter displays just how uninformed he keeps his American, and world-wide readers, by referring to the carefully thought out, regulated, scientifically backed-up policies of the Netherlands, in this instance Amsterdam specifically, towards the use of soft-drugs. He refers to these policies as 'easy'. As if no one gives a damn. CNN is not called Cracker News Network for nothing, and I bet they're proud of it. |

Brothel offers 'green' discount---if arriving by bike. And it's not Amsterdam? WTF?!
A German brothel is going green in a bid to attract more business in tough economic times.Customers who arrive by bicycle at Berlin's Maison d'Envie will receive a five-euro ($7, £4.30) discount on the usual fee of 70 euros. The discount also applies to those who can prove they took public transport to get there, owner Thomas Goetz said. |

Amsterdam: Life's a bike
Over recent years, Amsterdam has proved one of Europe's most popular short break destinations, and the perfect place to go for a relaxing escape from the tension and stress of city life. And yet, Amsterdam itself is a major city - so what makes it different from other European metropolises? Quite simply, it's the relaxed approach to life that separates Amsterdam from other European capitals, and what makes Amsterdam the perfect place to go to get away.
This way of life is perhaps symbolised best in Amsterdam's preferred form of travel: the bicycle. There are apparently more than a million bikes in Amsterdam, and when you consider that the population of the city is estimated at around about the same number, you begin to realise that the natives of the city are serious about being seriously easy-going! And yes, it may require more energy and take more time than driving or taking the tube - but when you've got all the time in the world, you can afford to take it!
As well as symbolising the relaxed attitude to city life, bikes also provide one of the best ways to enjoy this beautiful and artistic city. There are a number of stunning, bike-friendly parks and squares dotted through the city, including the famous Dam Square, the tranquil home of the Dutch Royal Palace, and the Vondelpark, which is perfectly situated near three major museums; the Rijksmuseum, the Stedelijk, and the ever-popular Van Gogh Museum.
As relaxing as a stress-free Amsterdam-style bike ride may be, a boat ride around Amsterdam's famous canal system (which gives Amsterdam the deserved nickname of Venice of the North) is another great way to experience the beauty of the city - in particular the stunning 17th century architecture that lines the canal in the centre of the city. A boat ride also offers the chance to see some of the more modern examples of the Amsterdam school of architecture, in particular buildings such as Renzo Piano's NEMO building, while Amsterdam's centre of science, which is in the shape of a ship's bow is an allusion to the Dutch Golden Age when Amsterdam's was one of the most important ports in the world.
As well as being a great city to tour by bike or boat, Amsterdam is a great place to just walk around and soak in the culture, whether it's wondering the famously friendly Red Light District or relaxing in one of the cities many relaxed, chilled-out coffee shops. Also, as is fitting for a capital city, Amsterdam is also home to fantastic museums, art galleries and venues that promote the history and culture of one of Europe's most popular and friendly cities. There are also a wide array of fantastic restaurants and hotels in Amsterdam to suit every taste and budget.
So if you're in need of a break, there's no better place to visit than Amsterdam, where life's as easy as riding a bike - and just as unforgettable! |

GVB Fare Increase, the Chipkaart, Nuts.
The 'OV-chipkaart'(public transport chip card) has been introduced recently for public transport, an electronic method of payment for the entire public transport system in The Netherlands. The 'OV-chipkaart' is a plastic card the size of a bank card. The card contains a chip and you pass it by a card by a scanner on the way in. The cards are available on the tram for purchase. What grinds our nuts is that when purchasing a single fare, for the new price of 2.60 (!!!), a woefull attempt to take the sting out of the 1 increase is made by labeling the card as a 1 hour pass. This gives you just enough time to ride to your destination, do your shopping (quickly), then, when endeavouring to take the return tram, discovering that it has just expired. So another 2.60 is required. Why not dispence with the sham 1 hour transit pass rubbish, or give a more realistic amount of time---2 hours, for example. |

FBI: Professor sought in 3 killings has plane ticket to Amsterdam
ASSOCIATED PRESS Tuesday, April 28, 2009 ATHENS, Ga. The search for a University of Georgia professor suspected of fatally shooting his wife and two men shifted away from this campus town Monday as the FBI revealed that he has a plane ticket for the Netherlands for Saturday and left behind an empty passport wallet. George Zinkhan has not been seen since the shootings at a community theater near campus Saturday, and law enforcement agencies nationwide are searching for him, authorities said. He travels frequently to Amsterdam and has family in Austin, officials have said. Authorities say they don't know what motivated the shootings. As classes resumed Monday on the campus where Zinkhan, a marketing professor, had taught since the 1990s, the university announced that he had been fired. As a precaution, university police carried assault rifles as they patrolled on foot, but University Police Chief Jimmy Williamson said investigators believe Zinkhan has left Athens, which is 70 miles east of Atlanta. Delta Air Lines confirmed that he has a ticket to Amsterdam, FBI Special Agent Gregory McClendon said in an affidavit as part of a criminal complaint accusing Zinkhan of flight to avoid prosecution. |
