Walking the Red Light Districts |
|
In the Red Light Districts of Amsterdam you will find, on any given day, hundreds of girls offering sex for money. Nowhere else on earth are the women so straightforwardly on display, sitting sparingly attired on stools behind windows. Nowhere else except in the other main Dutch cities, because this conspicuous window prostitution is distinct to the Netherlands, as distinct as the habit that many... [Read more] |

Amsterdam celebrates Keukenhof's 60th Anniversary
From 19 March - 21 May 2009, the world famous Dutch tulip festival at Keukenhof will be celebrating its 60th Anniversary and to mark the occasion, 5 star Hotel Okura Amsterdam is offering a special Keukenhof Flower Package. Over the last 60 years, Keukenhof has attracted almost 45 million visitors, who come to enjoy the stunning spring bloom of the tulip gardens. Its millions of blooming flower bulbs, fantastic flower shows and largest sculpture garden in the Netherlands, make Keukenhof the most photographed place in the world. This year, the 60th Keukenhof festival will be US themed, marking the historic links between the Netherlands and the United States and the 400th anniversary of the founding of New Amsterdam, later to become New York. Highlights will include a spectacular flower mosaic of the Statue of Liberty, using more than 25,000 bulbs and an American garden. Visitors will also be able to see Okura’s very own tulip in the gardens. The special red coloured bloom was first unveiled at Keukenhof in 1997 to celebrate the Hotel Okura Amsterdam’s 25th anniversary. The Hotel Okura Amsterdam, situated on the banks of the city's famous Amstel Canal, is the perfect place to stay for a city break and excursion to Keukenhof this spring. The Keukenhof Flower Package break costs from € 274 (approx £245) per room and includes one night's bed and breakfast accommodation in a standard double room based on two sharing and tickets and transport to Keukenhof. Deluxe double rooms cost from € 309 (approx £276) per room per night. For further information and reservations log on to okura.nl.

Holland Puts Offensiveness On Trial
Freedom of speech means the right to say hateful things. Yes, even Geert Wilders has that right. |

Has the world economic crisis got you feeling down? Cheer yourself yourself up with flowers!
When you've lost your job, your home is about to be foreclosed upon, and you can't eat...buy flowers from Holland! That'll cheer you up. |

New view from a urinal??
Rick Steves, an especially annoying travel writer and U.S. Public Television travel show presenter apparently has never noticed (after a claimed 20 years of visits!) that one can view prostitutes while relieving oneself from a few conveniently placed outdoor urinals. Outdoor urinal offers new view of Amsterdam, claims the title. We'd guess he was taking his leak just in front of 43 Singel ('t Koggeschip) from the description—and flirting with the ladyboys that often inhabit the window next door to #43. |

Loathsome local paper unf*cked
It's unfortunate, but Amsterdam Weekly, the paper that deserved to die, will continue. At least for awhile. The paper has apparently convinced a new invester that it can succeed by continuing to do exactly the same thing that led it to its recent near-death experience. The new invester is the publisher of the Isreali version of Time Out. An Amsterdam version of Time Out will be launched at the end of this month—September. Expected development: The Time Out title will replace Amsterdam Weekly in the near future. |

North-South subway line delayed. Again.
Amsterdam's troubled new subway line suffers another setback after serious accident. Homes evacuated. Engineering fault to blame. Mayor Cohen "orders" construction halted. |
