Rue d'Aerschot (Brussels) questions

Hey everyone, it's been a while since I've been to the RLD in Brussels (gare du nord)

I was reading through some of the dutch conversations on hookers.nl and I have a few questions that some of you might be able to answer (I'm planning a trip in a few weeks).

Is the activity at the Brussels RLD really going to stop in 2019?

Is there construction happening on rue d'Aerschot? I've read people talking about work on the sidewalks / streets?

Is Tuesday a slow day / night for rue d'Aerschot? Someone said Tuesdays is when a lot of girls are not working.

Is it still somewhat safe to walk around there around 20h / 21h? People are talking about an increase of crime/angry/violent migrants in the neighborhood.

Finally, I knew a girl name Gloria, she was Italian-Albanian. I think she was at the Caprice bar (204) and worked the night shift. Has anyone else been able to confirm that she is still there?

Thanks!

One of the issues in the Rue d'Aerschot RLD is that it is spread over 2 communities: St. Josse and Schaerbeeck. That causes confusion for outsiders. Each community has the status of a separate township and can thus make and follow it's own politics - there is no 'Brussels at large' in this case.

St. Josse (Socialist -run) seems to want to outlaw the RLD alltoghether. That concerns the southern sidestreets (up-hill) like Rue de la Prairie and Rue de la Rivière. IMHO socialists are pretty hypocrite when it comes to prostitition: in theory they propagate woman's rights and law-and-order, but they never handle underlying issues like poverty, trafficking etc. so what happens is that the business goes underground.
Schaerbeeck seems to want to play the 'Antwerp model': they realise the RLD is there, that prostitution can be outlawed but not really stopped in practice, and that it might be better to tolerate / regulate it in confined area's .

So it seems the southern end of the Aerschotstraat RLD will die a slow (or faster) death, while the northern part might survive longer (at least), with possibly an Antwerp -style covered RLD. This, obviously, up to the next elections, where political powers might turn, be exactly reversed or whatever..... Welcome in Belgium.

You can guess who has my sympathy.

Practically:

- Tuesday is fine IMHO. Monday is the slowest day. Sunday is dead.

- There is construction, yes. But that will remain for a long time. The ground - next to North station - gets worth more and more each year. That is a serious threat to the RLD in any way.

- Safety is definitely an issue. 21:00 wintertime is dark. Yes, you do run a risk. Yes, there are annoying southern meditteranean youth bothering you. Yes, the other side of the tracks, the North Station and associated bus station are infested with migrants, happily taking your wallet and phone. Up to you whether you are tough enough to handle that. Throwing fireworks to RLD visitors is so common no-one even notices that anymore. I personally wish Rentokil would clean the spot for a change. Serious.

- Antwerp is better nowadays. My heart weeps, but so be it. Happily, Bruxelles is still better for restaurants.

cheers,

Gaston.

Can't add much more to what G.lagaffe has said.

I pass through Brussels a lot and you do notice more and more construction going on at the station and on the main Street too (also, a lot of renovations on the streets behind too where the much much more dodgy RLD is)

For a good while I would defend the Brussels RLD and say it is safe and that the stories of it not being safe were exaggerations....until a few weeks ago. I was sitting outside a bar with a beer and a cigarette and one guy asked for one. As I have him it, he pretended to have a knife in his pocket and demand the rest of the packet. Luckily for me, the bar maid noticed him and rushed out to shooo him away. It doesn't sound like a big thing, but it did shake me up a little bit.

Later on that day, I caught a child (and I mean a boy who looked under 12) try to pick pocket me in the station.

Maybe I had bad luck that day, or maybe I've had good luck all the times before, but just my personal experiences.

In terms of the RLD, it's still quite decent selection.

Brussels is certainly a place I try to watch myself in. Lots of dodgy characters about. Only used to got here for the peep show really. That's sadly gone now. Anyone know of any other peep shows in Brussels?

The Peep show was decent fun for small change, but I think where it used to be is now a cafe so doubt it will come back to there.

In the Antwerp RLD there is a sex shop which says Peep show but never ventured in

Thanks. Peep shows have always been a favourite of mine. The one in Antwerp stopped having a peep show for some reason. It's there but never seems to be open whenever I've been there in the past few years.

In Brussels for a few hours as I change over coaches - RLD is fairly busy even at 9am. I noticed a sign on around 6 or 7 windows with the police sign at the bottom of the letter. Google Translates it roughly saying the future of this establishments business is dependant on the courts. These were mostly from the middle to the top end (furthest away end from the train station enterances)

Also, there were other posters about 'defending the rights of sex workers' and to 'not push them underground' from left wing groups, so it seems it's the Left that are opposing these moves.

Going to re-evaluate after having a few strolls up and down.

The closed windows with police sign are actually mixed from top to bottom of the street...I can only imagine they've done raids of some sort and found something they don't like OR have issues with the particular owners.

Also, it's not as busy as I first thought. A good lot of daytime windows empty.

Heavy Heavy police presence also. It's like they are going past in the car watching you watching the girls.

It felt pretty dull from the attitude of the girls at the window, not many seem to be aiming too hard to entice customers.

Oh, and SPLODGE - the previous Peep show place is now a cafe bar and a Shisha shop so I doubt you'll see a peep show appearing soon.

I barely slept last night on a coach, and I am taking another one soon, so maybe I am just not in the right mood, but this feels like a RLD on its end days.

Thanks for the updates. Sad to see it in decline.

Those signs all say different things:

Some of them (and just a few) say that the window was closed by ordinance of the city.

Most of them are simply letting you know what day of the week the window is closed.

Also, the backstreets - what's the European older woman situation like? I'm looking for 40-50 year old MILFs.

What general age range are we talking here? I didn't venture out that way because like people have been saying it's a bit dodgy. I saw one woman who has quite skinny, but she was just a tad too old for me - I reckon around her 60's.

You'll see a few older euro women. I bet they've seen some things over the years. You'll also see African women, somw in their 20s, 30s, 40s and 50s. Perhaps 60s too. The area is a tough area for sure. I wouldn't fsncy being in the vicinity at the wrong time of day or night. It's bad enough in the day. I too have noticed lots of renovation work and the closure of the peep show.

avoided this RLD on my last visit to belgium.

fate takes me through there again later this year, was thinking of taking a look, i am unsure now after ready these comments. i'm not particularly scared of migrants/crime, but would rather avoid any unnecessary altercations. might just go with 50 euros in my pocket and nothing else. IDK. we'll see haha

Thanks to la gaffe and others for the comments.

I was planning a trip to Brussels as they have a shop in town that sells cannabis and was told that Brussels is quite tolerant with weed?

Very tempted to check out the rld.
