The police cleaned up the whole area. Street dealers are gone. Even at 2 am nobody bothered me when I was there this summer.

My whole trip, I only had one evening where I saw street dealers, but that one evening, I had 4 dudes approach me, including one asshole who followed me for like half a block trying to sell me shit, despite me completely ignoring his presence. Does the dude think if he keeps asking I’ll change my mind, after giving him a firm no three times, then proceeding to ignore him? Fucking idiot.

My favorite incident happened 10 years ago now... I'll just copy/paste from my old trip report back then: Quote: Another time I was on OZA late at night, among the usual few loitering imbeciles... now, I really have to question their sales tactics here... guy goes, "hey, chubby... cocaine, ecstasy!" He seemed genuinely surprised when I gave him the finger over my shoulder rather than thank him for his compliment and eagerly purchase his wares! "Yeah, fuck you too, biatch!!"

I remember one guy followed me for ages once when I replied to his question of “coke?” with “do you have any Pepsi?” - I think this was in 2015. “You facking eeengleesh, you think you so facking funny!”
I remember my first trips in 2010 and that you couldn’t walk 2 minutes without being propositioned - even on Warmoesstraat in the middle of the afternoon.

It was sad in the '90s. I think they called it "Pill Bridge." Not only phony dealers, not only annoying beggars, but junkie guys trying to pimp their junkie girlfriends. Many had AIDS, I think. Only positive was that it was still the real RLD, so it was worth putting up with the bullshit and there were plenty of porn shops and coffee shops to head into to get away from the jerks for a while.
Centraal Station was quite a trip too. Lots of shady bastards, but at least it had some decent shops and a clean pay toilet to wash up in---invaluable for grooming after a RLD session.

Slight deviation, but is the coloured dude who used to scoot around the streets of AMS on his wheelchair shouting at people still around? I think he might have been Canadian or American rather than Nigerian, but boy he was a real pain in the arse. Last time I saw him was February 2012, so he might be long gone.

September 1990 I was wandering around and the place was full of pill pushers and such. Some dude wearing a white robe was ever present every night. He looked like a biblical character. Next time I was there was 2001 and by comparison the entire area was different. No constant haggling from street dealers and such.

I saw this guy in January 2015 last. Up to his same old antics. I'd like to think he was still around, along with the guy who puts the plant pot on his head LOL

Saw the flower pot guy in May 2017, he seemed weak and was just barely able to do a single push up. He was shaking and the pot fell spilling soil on the ground. He was rewarded with leftover beer and some change. Later in 2017 I didn't see him, which I always had done during my past visits so I asked about him at some bar on OZV. Apparently he died a little after I saw him.
I will always remember him when in around the De Wallen area.

Flower Pot man has a new Gig , we seen him in August kind of funny we always stay on Niewendijk , but anyhow we were over at the same time as the Pride Party . Early in the morning we hear a horn blowing and there he was . Yelling " Lets get the party started " Skinny and sickly looking. Later that night we were over just north of the RLD ( gay section ) and they had the singing Queens . There were two bars giving free beer on the street . You just throw a donation . Small cups and people throwing big donations . He was over there yelling free beer running from side to side doing poses getting drunk on his ass.
Dear Wife and I have been coming to Amsterdam for 25 years and it has certainly changed . Sadly it is not as entertaining as years ago or else we are getting older . This August will be our last for a while. Over the years we have made so many friends and enjoyed the city. Even one of our special friends , he is the Mayor of a city outside Amsterdam has told us Amsterdam is no longer worth visiting . Him and his wife travel to Keywest every year to Fantasy Fest . We visit the lifestyle Clubs and last year they talked us out of that .
Another friend of ours is a judge in Amsterdam we usually spend an evening with them when we go . Used to be when they would bring us back from our night out he would begin swearing because it would be late at night and he would see criminals he knew on the street late at night.
We have met so many really good people at the Swingers club's . All the way back to the Candy Club. Going to Amsterdam was almost like living a video game and every section with a new task and adventure , nowadays it all looks the same . Our friend the judge explained to us years ago that the city was clamping down on organized crime . When a property owner fell behind on taxes in the City Center the city would take it over and rent it to a fashion designer ………….only problem the tourists did not buy these fashions . They wanted to get rid of souvenior stores that sold the same stuff . They felt a lot of these stores laundered money.

Still quite a few in De Wallen on my last trip in August last year offering charlie etc...
Thought definitely a reduction over years gone by.
The only issue I've ever had with unsavoury characters was when me and a mate checked out of our hotel at 5am to get an early flight home last year, as i walked out the hotel with my bag on my back on Warmostraat some crack head took and instant shine and began following us up to the Grass Hopper. He was just shady looking and routing through his pockets as he was pacing us down. We just stopped and turned around, it was a mexican stand off for a few seconds then he scarpered.
I feel safer anywhere in Amsterdam than i do in any of the major UK cities. The biggest trouble causer generally is our fellow countrymen on stag do's that can't handle their ale and go looking for a fight.
