There is a planned strike by KLM ground crew on Wednesday 24 September.
It is only a single day, like similar strikes this summer. At least that is the plan for now.
Many flights for that day are being cancelled.
It does not look like t will be resolved.

I really don’t know if this is right , but we leave tomorrow and return next Wednesday. We called , our tickets are with Delta and KLM . Of course they told us Delta will be ok and we will not have any issues.

Delta code shares with KLM.
Delta uses KLM staff for baggage and ticket processing.
If KLM ground staff goes on strike, Delta passengers...and ALL other passengers at Schiphol...will notice.
Further proof that Delta Airlines is the single worst company on the face of the earth.

Regarding timing;
There are two kinds of airline strikes in the Netherlands.
Legal strikes comply with the union rules, and are announced weeks in advance.
There were at least two of those this summer.
Illegal strikes, those that do not comply with union rules, can happen without warning. This also happened at least once this summer.
Apparently, the unions don't think the legal strikes are disruptive enough to get the raise they want, and they have no problem breaking the rules, pissing off customers, disrupting travel, and wasting money to prove their point. Repeatedly.
And without consequence.

An industry doing everything it can to damage customers. What could go wrong?

And for those of you that didn't get the message yet,
A six hour strike by ground crew is planned for 24 September,
and an eight hour strike is scheduled for 1 October.

Well, we got bit by the strike . Our direct travel to Amsterdam via KLM . Cancelled . Moved to Houston to Atlanta to Amsterdam . Cancelled a few hours later . Then another choice to fly through with Delta to Detroit cancelled . We called Delta . They put us on an Air France flight to Paris , with a one hour layover. Of course we missed the flight with a one hour layover . Booked a later flight out of Paris finally got here 20 hours later .. … 10 hour flight became 20 hours. …We did get coupons in Paris worth 11.00 EU each to spend at kiosks for food. We don’t know what to expect next Wednesday when we leave. But , there are options KLM , Delta and Air France. .

FunFor2,

Sorry to hear you got screwed in that mess. But you are seasoned travelers, able to overcome a few challenges in Amsterdam. It is a sucky way to start a trip, but I'm sure you will recover.
What about the people that can't adjust, or don't know their way around?
Can you imagine? Weddings, funerals....
The Dutch have a Blue-Ribbon Committee and a multi-year study for every fucking problem on earth.
This is how they manage pay negotiations with the baggage handlers union every three years.
Go figure.

We got in several hours later via Paris . We paid for a direct and moved to Paris . One hour to get off and make another flight ……..It too nearly a half hour to get off . Then to the next gate nope couldn’t be done . They found us another flight in. Now arriving at Schipol was a mess . People everywhere not really knowing where or what to do. We did get 11EU each from Air France for the problems. …Now , next Wednesday we leave . We might get another night in town paid for by KLM.. …Nobody knew what the strike is about . The beautiful French girl who rerouted us said about every four months they do this. . ……Who can get mad at a good looking girl with a good personality and sense of humor.

I hope you made it home without issues.
It has not been a good summer for air travel in Europe,
and yesterday looked especially bad.

Well we got a text Monday afternoon , our flight for Wednesday was cancelled. . Our choice leave Tuesday 9:30 Am or Thursday 9:30 Am. We chose Tuesday . Screw it . Now we are dicking with KLM about a day we paid for at our hotel that they would not refund . We have filed a report with KLM customer service. AI . We had paid for a direct flight over . Never got that . We paid for assigned seats , never got that . Got our vacation shorted , had a reserved hotel …You don’t get a live person. KLM / Delta , probably all airlines right now are trash anymore.

Latest Update:

The 1 October strike has been called off.
KLM was in court Monday asking for a ruling to force the unions back to work.
When it appeared that the unions would lose in that ruling, they baked off.
Three smaller unions have already accepted 2.25% increases per year for two years.
The remainder are demanding 7% per year for three years.
Air France announced that they are looking for a new partner at Schiphol,
as high wages and frequent strikes make the KLM services "uncompetitive".

So, maybe there will be consequences.

We have filed on KLM about losing our money on a room we were forced to pay for . Filed September 28th , no responses yes no or anything . We used to love KLM , felt fortunate to fly KLM . Never again KLM , Delta and Air France can go away . We will never use any of them again.

Two years ago we flew Singapore Airlines . We got held up in Manchester England because of security . Their scanners weren’t working so they decided to wreck our carry on bags. We have never been treated that way. One of the guys with us had a hat on . A security guy told him to take his hat off, we don’t wear hats indoors in England . We were last to get on the aircraft and they held the flight up because of us . Singapore Airlines apologized for the English security people and gave us all travel gifts. ..

I have a claim with Delta over my last flight to AMS.
I spent $1200 plus 100k miles on an upgrade to first-class, because I am old.
I thought it would be nice to arrive refreshed and happy from the comfy seat and all the pampering.
This is the first time I have ever spent miles for an upgrade.
I Got:
A three hour delay on the first leg, original plane broke down and had to be replaced.
Arrived at MSP 15 minutes before doors close on the AMS flight.
No time for the lounge, food or drink.
Sprinted across the length of MSP, and was the last one on as the doors closed. Dripping sweat.
Flight to AMS pulls away and stops. Electrical failure. A SECOND 3-hour delay for repairs.
Arrived three hours late, smelled like a gym bag, and had to wash and change shirts in the AMS bathroom.
After a week of bitching at Delta, they gave me 17k miles refund, and refuse anything further. Not even a club pass. Nada.
My January flight will be on SAS, for $250 less than the Delta flight.
Fuck Delta and their frequent flyer scam.

Sorry to hear. Sometimes various organizations inquire months or years later as to why you no longer deal with them. Should that happen, it can be an opportune time to be very candid if you so choose.

There is a quote attributed to Wal Mart founder Sam Walton that's worth noting:

"There is only one boss: the customer. And he can fire everybody in the company from the chairman on down, simply by spending his money somewhere else."

Jim,

I won't hold my breath.
I gave Delta every opportunity to clean up their crap.
Standard Delta performance is three hours late and a lost bag.
If they come back in 6-12 months, I don't see how that would convince me to return to spending $10k a year with them.
Their Loyalty program is a trap, golden handcuffs at best.
If the experience is shitty, and 40 years as a frequent flier gets you a compensation offer so low that it is insulting, there isn't much else to say.
It looks like I will save over $1000 dollars on my next three flights by avoiding Delta, and taking SAS.
Now what would I rather have?
$1000 or a handful of Delta points that tie me to more misery on Delta?
The worst company on earth.

According to Business Insider, Delta received $5.44 billion from the US government as part of the CARES Act bailout of the airlines back in 2020:

Evidently Delta shows its gratitude to the taxpayers (and long time customers) by treating people like garbage.
