Well many years after first reading Aldebran’s excellent post on taking Truffles and having my interest piqued I finally got around to trying them for myself during my last trip to Amsterdam.

During the intervening 6/7 years I’d always had an excuse for not trying them. Not enough time. There were other things I wanted to do. And sometimes I was just too nervous about taking them. However, prior to my November trip, whereby I was going for three nights rather than my usual two, I decided now was the time. In the weeks leading up to my trip I read extensively about truffles. Where to get them, what to expect, the good points and the bad. Quite rightly there were always warnings about what could go wrong and I was eager to make sure I didn’t make any newbie mistakes. The big issue that I just couldn’t overcome was that I would be taking my first ‘trip’ alone. Unfortunately I don’t mix in the correct circles to ask someone to watch me while I’m off my face on halluciagenic drugs.

And so onto the day itself. I’d already been in Amsterdam for two days and had decided that I was going to take the Truffles early morning at about 7 or 8am. This is time I would normally be in the hotel and it also meant that I didn’t ‘lose’ much of the day. I could still go out in the afternoon and enjoy this amazing City. I’d bought the Truffles the night before from a smart shop on Warmostraat. It had been easy enough although I was expecting to be quizzed a little more by the person behind the counter. I approached the experience cautiously and had the attitude that I’d rather be slightly underwhelmed than take too much and have a bad experience. It also helped that I’m back in Amsterdam in December and so can repeat the experience then. With all the above in mind I bought 15g of Mexicana Truffles (I can’t remember the price but it was less than 20 euros).

So at 7am on Thursday 5 November I tentatively opened the box and ate approximately 7-10 grams. Never having done anything like this before I really didn’t know what they would taste like. The reviews I’d read varied as to whether the taste was horrible or bearable. My own personal point of view was that they started off not nice but eatable. But with each bite they got worse and worse. It wasn’t just the taste but the texture too. I eventually had to eat chocolate cookies at the same time to be able to get them down. But about 15 minutes after I started I’d eaten the first batch.

As already mentioned I was taking them on my own while holed up in my hotel room. The fact that I didn’t have a sober sitter was a concern and so my way around this was to write messages on Post It notes and stick them all around the room. Messages like ‘Stay positive’, ‘Think happy thoughts’ and a ‘Careful now’ one on the window!!
Overall I’m sure that I had a mild trip. After about an hour and a half I ate the remainder of the box and so had had the full 15 grams but despite this the whole trip just felt like the effects of some strong space cake which I’ve been doing for years. There were differences obviously, with some open eye visuals with the walls and ceiling pulsing and vibrating. There was also none of the heavy feeling and tiredness which I experience with space cake. Overall I love these types of experiences because of the way it alters the way I perceive the World. Things which you normally take for granted you begin to question and are able to analyse from a completely different angle and I find all this fascinating. Unfortunately because I didn’t take any notes my memory of what I experienced is limited. There were a couple of periods where I did feel like I could have been on the verge of a bad episode. Nothing specific but it just felt like there was a sinister presence lingering nearby. When this did happen though I was easily able to move past it with some positive or happy thoughts.

A lot of the reviews I’d read indicated that the self-introspection could sometimes be the thing that could give the trip a negative vibe, however, I found this to be the complete opposite. I’m actually normally quite hard on myself and this trip actually allowed me to look at my life differently and see all the positives within it. I felt euphoric at one stage and it’s this that I would hope to happen next time.

Eventually as I was getting towards the end of my trip I felt like I could go outside and just enjoy the come down out in the open. My thoughts were still looking at things differently but I was able to cope with hustle and bustle of the city without it overwhelming me.

Overall it was a fantastic experience and one which I’ll definitely do again in December. Although the trip was quite mild I’ll probably do the same again next time. I’m still a newbie and I’m eager to have good positive experiences. I think I’ll take my time to learn about these types of drugs before trying larger or stronger doses. The only thing I would change next time is maybe being ready to go out and about a bit earlier next time.

Hopefully this review will provide some more info to those thinking about trying Truffles and will add to this already excellent post.

Thanks for reporting back, I'm glad the experience was enjoyable.

I know what you mean about the taste, it's not too bad but leaves a sour aftertaste. I remember that the "Innerspace" smartshops used to suggest eating some dark chocolate with it (which they conveniently had on sale) - those 'Verkade' brand bars they sell in Albert Heijn & Kruidvat. I'm not normally a big fan of dark chocolate, but a piece of this has a strong enough flavour to get rid of most of the aftertaste, and then the rest of the bar tastes gorgeous when I'm coming down later on.

If you are specific about what you want, both the weight and the type, they will probably just sell it to you without question because it sounds like you have done some research or tried them before (especially if you look fairly mature and sensible). If you ask for the stronger types they will often question if you've done them before. If you sound a bit vague or tell them you're interested in trying magic truffles, they would most likely ask you some questions and launch into a longer explanation of what to expect and which type is best to try first. Sometimes they also hand out a flyer with some info on it, like the McSmart guidelines at the start of the FAQ.

I smiled when I read this because I remember doing something similar when I first tripped in Amsterdam. The hotel room had a balcony (Hotel Di-Ann, between Dam Square and the Westerkerk) and I didn't want to get too crazy during the trip.

When someone has a bad experience its usually because these kind of 'bad vibes' settle in and get magnified out of proportion, especially if the dose is high and the trip is becoming very intense. Sometimes the introspection can turn very negative at the same time, or you start worrying that the "I feel weird" sensations are something more serious. Even so, the trip will usually move on and the vibe changes back to positive again, you just 'ride out' any negative bits of the trip as best you can.

I felt euphoric at one stage and it’s this that I would hope to happen next time.

I usually find that trips feel weird during the onset and then more euphoric during the peak and the comedown. A slightly higher dose will give more euphoria, but also more of the weirdness....

Have fun! :)

AL has been so informative that there's little to add, but just a couple of mentions:

Music is pretty much essential, something you already know you like.

TV is appalling, avoid it.

Some weed to smoke during the coming down phase makes for an even more mellow/chilled experience, and can also kick you back into the trip a bit, especially if you're feeling "what? is that it? over already?" as you return to normal.

Food and drink likewise, the munchies amplified. Natural drinks I prefer - juice (but not early/at peak - citrus tends to quench the trip), sparkling water or tonic water are my favourites. Avoid synthetic drinks like coke ,fanta, camel barf, they all taste foul.

Alcohol is a complete no-no. Not a drop, not even a beer. Just don't. Really. Have one tomorrow.

Clothes are a nuisance and best done without, if the right place can be arranged in advance.

Sex is exquisite, though maybe inconclusive. I can't orgasm until it's something like 90% over, but with a little viagra I can stay hard forever and enjoy gently paced marathon sex, far longer than I can straight or with weed. 69 is Heaven. Sauna Club girls can be Heavenly, and even better is a willing lover/partner who shares enthusiasm for sex. The RLD wouldn't suit me, I'd not want to be putting my clothes on again right away.

Shivers at the start can be countered by staying under the bedcovers, or in a sauna or jacuzi, if available. Or in a long warm-to-hot shower or bath. A hotel with unlimited hot water is the best place for this.

After many nice trips, I had one not-so-nice, anxiety wouldn't let up. Clockwatching, will I be straight in time for the last train, what time do I need to get a taxi, does anyone notice I'm trippin...... sprang from being delayed that day, transport hassles, and another delay getting hold of the truffles, a hassle with my bank card, late arriving at my startpoint, having doubts about was it too late in the day to take them. All minor irritations, but I should have simply given up til tomorrow, instead I took them anyway in a rush, and spent the entire trip with an anxious inner monolog fretting about all kinds of things, where's my money, did I close my locker properly (went back repeatedly to check). Bummer, not in terror and fear, but in enough anxiety to derail the purpose, which was supposed to be one of pleasure.

So make sure your "set and setting" are all good-to-go, worries left at the threshold, plenty of time for all that in the rest of your life, starting tomorrow.

A quick update on Amsterdam smartshops

These are stores I've used before and found to have reasonable prices & service. There are plenty of others, some touristy places in the centrum tend to be overpriced, although there must be some good ones I've missed... Azarius at Kerkstraat 119 is somewhere I want to take a look at.

The Headshop, Kloveniersburgwal 39 (near Nieuwmarkt)
http://www.headshop.nl
Good prices on the McSmart range, also stock some of the Sirius products.

Conscious Dreams Kokopelli, Warmoesstraat 12 (near the RLD)
http://www.kokopelli.nl/
Probably the best known smartshop in Amsterdam; worth a look around even if you aren't buying anything! Stock McSmart products (High Hawaiians for €25 is a good price) plus a few others.

Tatanka, Korte Leidsedwarstraat 151A (near the Leidseplein)
http://www.tatanka.nl/
Good for the McSmart range. Another place that sells the High Hawaiians for €25.

Innerspace, Spuistraat 108 (near Dam Square)
http://www.innerspace.nl
The only place I've found that sells 20g packs of Dragon's Dynamite. Sells the McSmart range. Maybe not the cheapest but an old favourite of mine!

Mushroom Galaxy, Halvemaansteeg 12 (near Rembrantplein)
http://www.tatanka.nl/
Now owned by Tatanka. Tiny place just off the Rembrandtplein that stocks the McSmart range.

Magic Mushroom Gallery, Spuistraat 249 (near Dam Square)
http://magicmushroom.com/shop/index.php
An interesting shop that stocks the full range of Sirius sclerotia

Chills & Thrills, Nieuwendijk 17 (near central station)
http://www.chillsandthrills.com
Owned by the Procare group who produce the sclerotia with the Magic Truffles brand with the pig logo - as you would expect they stock a good range of it.

When Nature Calls, Keizersgracht 508 (Corner of Leidsestraat / Keizersgracht near Koningsplein)
http://www.whennaturecalls.nl
At the other end of town, this little place also has some of the "Magic Truffles" range.

Number One Smartshop, Oude Hoogstraat 4 (near Dam Square)
Stocks the Mushmagic range (Utopia, Hollandia e.t.c) if you are looking for those...

I used to like the two Elements of Nature smartshops on Warmoesstraat (stocked McSmart and Sirius I seem to remember) but I'm not sure if these are still open.

And one to avoid:

The former Innerspace store at Staalstraat 5 (near Waterlooplein) appears to be under new ownership, I don't think it is part of Innerspace any more. On a recent visit they offered me a "good deal" on 15g packs of dragon's dynamite (I wanted to buy 3) but the price was €27.50 per pack.....that's €10 more than the usual price!

This is an excellently detailed account of the full range of potential effects, pitfalls and benefits of hallucinogenic fungi/truffles. Really impressive!

Just wondering: Has anyone ever tried visiting a WG during the later, more sober (4.5 hours or more) effects of a trip? That's to say: a point in time where you aren't likely to behave so strangely that she asks you to leave..? Worth trying or should be avoided?

Although I didn't visit one of the gals in the latter half, I certainly did in the first half, perhaps maybe 2 hours into a trip that might have been 5-6 hours in length. Yes, it was in the RLD and it was intense. Great sex. Awesome sex. But I couldn't ejaculate, and since I am one of her regulars, she let me stay but she got aggressive as she wanted me to cum, but there was nothing doing. She didn't figure it out, but basically it felt like my cock went numb, partly because she was jerking it off to no end, but sadly I knew that I couldn't do that do her and myself and we left it at that. She was pretty flexible with payment too and just said whatever you think is right. Also the red lighting while banging in the kamer was very trippy.

Bumping this awesome thread back to the top. First, thanks for such helpful info! I'm looking to take my first truffle trip this summer, and was wondering if anyone could update on prices/brands/smartshops, as I'm sure there's been some changes since the last update.

Thanks all!!

Looks like Aldebran hasn't been online in 6 months or so. I found this as a reply to his last trip report, so copying it over here for easy finding. Hope this helps some folks!!

Quote:
Mushrooms / Truffles - Actual magic mushrooms used to be on sale in Amsterdam prior to December 2008, my first few trips were on these, but the experience is pretty much the same as 'truffles' (sclerotia) because the active compound (psilocin / psilocybin) is the same in both. In terms of general effects and so on, there is a Sclerotia FAQ here on Ignatzmice which I wrote a few years back.

The only thing on there which is a bit out of date is probably the dosage advice. The standard dose for 'magic truffles' is a 15g pack, and you can usually choose from a range of products that are intended to cover a potency range from mild to manic. The milder ones are usually labelled "mexicana" and "tampanensis" (which are real species), Atlantis is usually somewhere in the middle (another real species although its technically a type of "galindoi") then there more potent products (which will generally be the same stuff but grown for longer so that the potency increases) which are usually given crazy names like Dragon's Dynamite and High Hawaiians.

If you find a decent smartshop they can explain the range they sell. I like Tatanka down near the Leidseplein (with another little store on Halvemansteeg off Rembrantplein, plus I think they also own The Headshop which is on Kloviniersburgwal where it intersects with Damstraat (or whatever Damstraat changes into as it heads away from Dam Square...). There's also Innerspace and The Magic Mushroom Galaxy on Spuistraat. Conscious Dreams at the end of Warmoestraat is very funky and worth a visit, even if you just wander around without buying anything. There's also When Nature Calls on Leidsestraat and Chills and Thrills on Nieuwendijk. There are plenty of others but some of them charge quite a bit more for the same products! Don't listen too much to advice that says "this one is more happy and laughing, this is more visual or philosophical" or whatever as basically the only difference is the potency of what you are eating, and your main concern is which is stronger and what kind of trip do you want (visuals are largely dependent on dose and surroundings).

For a first time trip it makes sense to stick with a standard 15g dose, and choose the product based on your personal intentions. If you just want a taste of the experience and will be happy with more of a buzz and less of a trip, or you don't feel particularly confident about tripping, then choose a milder type like Mexicana or Tampanensis, but don't expect anything too wild. Atlantis is usually fairly reasonable, not too weak, not usually too strong. It's hard to judge potency because it can vary quite a lot. The only ones I eat regularly these days are Dragon's Dynamite and High Hawaiians (both produced by McSmart) and I think a 15g dose of Dragon's Dynamite would not be unreasonable for a beginner - you would feel something and get some sort of trip, but it shouldn't be too overwhelming. It's hard for me to judge what any particular dose would feel like to someone who's never tried it before....

Finally, if you are going to trip, it matters where you do it ("set and setting"). Tripping outdoors in busy places can quickly become overwhelming and fuel your paranoia, and I almost always trip indoors for this reason. A mild dose is more suitable for outside (you will probably be more aware of the effects than if you were just sat in bed looking at the walls) but really you want somewhere peaceful like a quiet corner of the Vondelpark where you are not going to feel too conspicuous or need to cross roads when you are high and not paying attention. If you trip in a park make sure you have water, maybe some light snacks for the comedown (but don't eat for about 4 hours before you trip) and don't get sunburnt (hey, I know it rains a lot in Amsterdam but you have to be optimistic....). It's quite normal to feel weird when you take psychedelics so it helps a lot if you are in a place where you can just sit or lie down in calm surroundings. Also if you are tripping outdoors it would make sense to leave valuables and credit cards e.t.c in your hotel safe and just take a little bit of cash, and maybe something to play music on (it's nice to trip and listen to music).

This is such an awesome thread. Thanks to all the contributors. Although I am a longtime user of psilocybin mushrooms, I had not known anything about magic truffles. When I had seen them in the smart shops, I frankly didn't believe they could be the "real thing".

I paid a visit to AMS a few weeks back after reading this thread and I'm happy to say I bought a pack of Atlantis one afternoon and had a grand time. Ate half the pack on the street and after an hour decided I'd be better off in the confines of my hotel room where I finished off the pack and nearly burst out of my body. Magic truffles are real!

IQ, which Smart Shop did you use? How much did you pay for the Atlantis?

I’m looking forward to my first truffle trip next month.

I bought them at Innerspace on Spui. They were packaged professionally in vacuum sealed plastic inside a small plastic box. I don’t recall the price. It was around E10 give or take a few euros.

Innerspace has laminated truffle menus on the counter. It lists all the brands, their relative strengths, and package weights with prices. Friendly staff was helping a dude while I was there. Thanks to this thread I had no questions and knew exactly what I wanted. All the truffle packages are in a display cooler ready for grab and go.

Just thought I’d bump this brilliant thread again.

Aldebran you wouldn’t believe how many times I have read this thread since you posted it. Each time I have a ‘trip’ coming up I still get excitited and in the days leading up to it I find myself trawling through these pages.

And tomorrow is ‘the day’.

And the thread has one of the funniest lines in it that still makes me lol

“You won’t see marching penguins in your hotel (unless you brought them with you when you checked in). On a high enough dose you might become convinced that there are invisible penguins surrounding you (but frankly your obsession with penguins is beginning to disturb me)”

Hope everyone is tripping safe.

Cheers

It's almost exactly nine years and over 75,000 views since I posted the FAQ, and getting close to ten years since the 'shroom ban' and the change to selling sclerotia instead of fresh mushrooms. I'm glad it's still useful; I intend to write and post a revised and updated version sometime before this one reaches it's tenth birthday.

One thing I've noticed over the years is that the potency of certain products can vary somewhat or decline over time, especially where they've been usurped by a newer "special edition", so it can be hard to give good, consistent dosage advice that still makes sense a few years later. Also I do wonder if the some of the effects merely seem less strong to me now, just because I've become familiar to the experience over time - for example I used to get a lot more general confusion when I first experimented with shrooms and sclerotia.

I hope your latest trip was a good one - by coincidence I was heading to Holland the day after your post.

I still haven't experienced any penguin-related hallucinations, although when your hotel places a giant glowing Miffy in the lobby those kind of hallucinations become somewhat redundant. Having said that, polar bears have made an appearance in my closed-eye visuals. One particular trip had such a surge of bear-related sightings that you could almost call it an Ursine Incursion. These are quotes from my (15th) trip journal dated January 2010, with a dose of 20g Atlantis:

Quote:
1 hour 25 min: I feel ferociously cold. Glacially Cold. There are polar bears wearing fleeces on the elevators in the transport systems in my head.

1 hour 30 min: Why is it so fucking cold? There are species of bear on the moving staircases in my head and they appear to be wearing fleeces.

2 hours 11 min: I am cold. I am tired. I am waiting alone on a train station for Paddington Bear. You can't miss that hat. Be on the lookout for marmalade sandwiches and assorted cakes.

Closed Eye Visuals: Mostly Bears. Bears in hats. Bears everywhere. Scare Bears. Happy Bears....

3 hours 17 min: Please look after this bear

I've posted various trip reports based on my trip journals on the Shroomery (see links). Some of them are fairly wild as I was experimenting with higher doses most of the time during my first few years of visiting Amsterdam. It must be emphasised that at certain points some of these trips became extremely frightening, delusional, panic-filled nightmares, which is part of the reason for the emphasis on dosing sensibly in the FAQ. In one trip journal it bluntly states the horror of this approach by saying "I died so many times in so many rooms". That's how it feels - you die in there and you come back.

The other reason for the emphasis on safety, and for posting the FAQ in the first place, is my experience of a teenage acid trip that went a bit wrong. Strong psychedelics, youth and inexperience are not always a good combination! Those were pre-internet days but if I'd had some kind of tripping guidelines to follow it might have been different...

In my more recent trips I like to dose high, but not *too* high, reaching that tipping point where it feels as though the aliens are just around the corner, where you can sense the abyss without falling into it. I try to use the weird atmosphere of the trip to write short stories with a sci-fi / horror vibe. Finding that personal sweet spot where the trip is not too weak, not too strong, can be difficult but with a bit of careful experimentation over several trips you can get there...

Trip 1 - Amsterdam Hotel Tripping

Trip 2 - "I am a Canine Adviser of a Sonic Noiseboard" - 12g fresh Copes + 35g fresh Cubes

Trip 3 - A Hallucinogenic Nightmare of Unbelievable Intensity - delusions, mania & pans cyans

Trip 4 - The Egyptian Room "When the walls glow with psychedelic fire – a colorful pans cyans experience"

Trip 5 - It's raining ideas – some things I wrote while I was tripping on pans cyans

Trip 6 - Deep-Fried Kittens! Thunder-Sized Drinks! Delirious random nonsense on 105g fresh cubes...

Trip 7 - Black Number

Trip 8 - Aldebaran's Hallucinogenic Petting Zoo of Unreliable Ideas

Trip 9 - We Fly KLM "Mysteries of pans cyans - There are some things you are too old to learn and too young to understand"

Trip 10 - 50g Mexicana Sclerotia - BURN EVERYTHING

Trip 11 - I wrote this when I was tripping on 40g Mexicana Sclerotia

Trip 12 - Pans Cyans: Outrageous Visuals, God & the Zoo Inside My Brain

Trip 13 - 20g Atlantis Sclerotia - Revelations in the Furniture

Trip 17 - 15g Dragon's Dynamite Sclerotia - an indirect way to experience Egypt

Trip 50 something - Tentacles & Time-Travel on 42g sclerotia - welcome to EUROPA

Best Wishes and safe, happy tripping! - Aldebran Linkbat

Also I do wonder if the some of the effects merely seem less strong to me now, just because I've become familiar to the experience over time - for example I used to get a lot more general confusion when I first experimented with shrooms and sclerotia.

This is something I’m struggling with so much at the moment. My last few trips have been bitterly disappointing. My personal circumstances mean I’m not able to visit Amsterdam any more and so I have to rely on the truffles being posted to me. My most recent trip saw me take 20+ grams of Hollandia truffles, which I was warned were super strong, but the trip was virtually non-existent. And this was unfortunately on the back of a disappointing experience a couple of months previously.

I realise there is no exact science to the strength of truffles and so it can be hit or miss. I normally er on the side of caution with my doses but I think I’ve now had enough less than great experiences to really start to trust my judgement. I’ll normally be thinking ‘give them a bit longer’ before adding to my original dose. And then its too late.

I think from now on it’s a case of getting to the hour mark and then really upping the dosage if needed.

I’ve now been taking truffles for 4 four years now and yet I still keep learning.

Once again Aldebran thanks for all your advice and posts, they are very much appreciated.

I have to admit that I have never sampled the truffles in Amsterdam, but I did a lot of the mushrooms when they were available. I think that there may be something else going on too. I think that the fungi that I was getting there were becoming inbred or something like that. Mushrooms are said to have a memory and what I started getting were mushrooms that were becoming angry at being commercialized. OK, a little anthropomorphic, but on a scientific level, I think that the techniques used to grow the fungi can adversely affect the quality of hallucinogens when done on a large scale.

In my particular case, I began having a lot more difficult trips, usually with a death experience included. More than once I remember cleaning up the room so that they wouldn't find such a mess when they discovered my body. It's always a peaceful and beautiful death, but all too real and not particularly how I want to spend my time tripping.

After the mushrooms became illegal in Amsterdam I have been able to source fungi from other places and have not had problems with death. So, did the mushrooms in Amsterdam become angry from being exploited? And are the truffles following suit? Going on strike from being overbred? Unfortunately we don't have any objective measures for hallucinogenic substances. I sure wish there were a way to have a guaranteed happy trip. But then, the uncertainty and the lessons the difficult ones bring are all part of the experience.

Regarding the coldness:
This is an effect that used to occur from time to time for me with mushrooms. Now it is a regular occurrence (the coldness, not the trips). I blame it on getting older, as I get cold easily all the time now. I have found that the cold sets in toward the end of the come up period. If I get cold then, there is almost no hope. I'll be shaking cold and miserable the whole trip. All I can do is burrow in blankets and I'm still cold. But I have started to prepare for it. I layer on clothing to the point of overheating and keep the clothes on until I make it up to the cruise portion of the trip and this has seemed to work. If I can stay warm past the come up, I'm good unless I encounter something that would make anybody cold.

It's unfortunate that the truffles seem to have the same coldness effect. I have been wanting to try some on one of my Amsterdam journeys but just haven't gotten to it. At least I'll know to be prepared.

Always good to see some interest in the community.
Anybody else out there ancient enough to remember alt.drugs.mushrooms on Usenet? Bob Wallace (one of the Microsoft founders) was a frequent contributor. Good times

I could definitely use some Truffles to take the edge off the world.
