hahaha i only ever seem to seem them in amsterdam. i really hate those things. i don't want to generalize but it seems that only the troublemakers wear them. you see the shitty tourist shops selling them, i was joking with a couple of friends a trip or two ago about buying a pile, kitting ourselves out and blending in :D

mind you i'd also need hi top sneakers, drainpipe jeans and six gallons of hair gel.

Sorry for bumping an old thread, but there are some pretty wild generalisations here. Has it struck anyone that it's likely that you notice the Brits being noisy or boisterous because they speak English? I mean, I've seen plenty of rowdy and sometimes obnoxious behaviour, it is by no means confined to Brits and is in fact rarely caused by them. The thing is, if you are English you notice English people more.

I went into the Tiger Bar one night and some drunk Russians were causing problems. The owner is Egyptian I think and he was away, there was a middle-aged lady at the bar on her own. When the lads started getting over the top I stepped in (thank God I was stoned, sometimes I think my stonedness transmits itself via osmosis so people I encounter get calmed down! I'm also 6 foot and 13 stone) and calmed the lads down and suggested they leave. The barmaid bought me a pint.

In the hiatus I asked her if she felt it was true the Brits were the worst behaved in dam. Not at all, she said. The Russians and Italians can be troublesome, but even this is a generalisation. The Brits, she said, can be noisy, but it's invariably good natured and not at all threatening. Loud, yes, the worst troublemakers, not at all. I'm sorry if anyone's had problems with Brits, please try not to allow the experience lead you to make sweeping prejudicial remarks.

And for the record I have never once had a negative reaction from a girl when I tell them I'm English. In fact one Polish girl I got chatting with told me her nation's preconceptions of English people. "Very dry sense of humour" she said "Always support the underdog. Take the piss out of themselves. Don't really take anything seriously. Strong sense of fair play"

I'll settle for that.
