been meaning to do this for ages, and Coolwhips thread has prompted me into action. Maybe we can sticky this thread and hopefully one of the mods can helpfully keep it updated as people add things to it?
first of all, this site is very useful:
http://www.europeanbeerguide.net/pubs.htmIn De Wildemanhttp://www.indewildeman.nl/my fave pub in amsterdam. loads of beers on taps and bottled, they even have an iphone app so you can keep track of their cask ales. bar staff really great here too. pubs getting very popular these days, has wifi, and NO SPORT
Cafe De Stoofhttp://www.destoofamsterdam.nl/nice little pub in the RLD. if you sit in the front, or right at the back, you get a good view of some Kamers.
they show major football stuff in here, and sometimes the place is full of dutch football fans (who scare the shit out of me). there is a smoking (tobacco) room downstairs, and a cat. plays very cheesy music (usually).
The Pinthttp://www.yelp.co.uk/biz/caf%C3%A9-bar-the-pint-amsterdamWynand Fockinkhttp://www.wynand-fockink.nl/en/home-enBluto says: " I love that place! Opened in 1679 according to their website and looks it. The staff are great and are happy to teach you all about the history of jenever (the predecessor to modern day gin), suggest various varieties to try, etc. One time when it wasn't too busy they took me in back for a private tour of the facilities. Just a great little place. Most of the booze is distilled right there on premises. If you're in the mood for something traditional, go for a kopstoot (headbutt), which is a shot of jenever with a beer (pilsener) chaser. They also have an extensive selection of schnapps. I recommend the citroen brandewijn (something a bit similar to limencello, but much nicer in my opinion.) It is only open from 3pm - 9pm. "
The Old Sailorhttp://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowUserReviews-g188590-d4071950-r161069201-The_Old_Sailor-Amsterdam_North_Holland_Province.htmli have mixed opinions on this place. its nice during the day during the week (its quiet, has nice views of the canal and Molensteeg!), but a bit mental in the evenings and weekends. or when theres football on.
doesn't have a sit down toilet, so don't go here if you need a poo.
Excaliburhttp://www.excaliburcafe.nl/biker/hells angel/metal-rock pub - great if you like loud music and mad movies on the TV. has pool tables upstairs.
De Bekeerde Susterhttp://www.debekeerdesuster.nl/brew their own beers (which are great) and does amazing pub food. ask any ignatzmice members who have come here. highly recommend this place.
Cafe De Engelbewaarderhttp://www.cafe-de-engelbewaarder.nl/just south of Nieuwmarkt, alongside the canal. Does a great range of different beers and has a couple of outdoor areas. and Wifi. Considering where this pub is, i find it to be very quiet and friendly and out of the way of tourists. a local bar in the centre of amsterdam? maybe.
Cafe Rememberhttps://www.facebook.com/CafeRememberused to be Ignatzmice central, due to the fact you can smoke in the back. however has gone downhill in the last couple of years since the barstaff changed over. used to be staffed by a couple of hot girls that played excellent music on the jukebox. now its all sports screens and obnoxious dance music, and usually full of wankers. if thats your thing, come here on a weekend evening, its mental. has wifi. has a cat.
Cafe Pleinzichtcan't find a URL, know nothing about this place.
Torenzichthttp://www.torenzicht.com/De Prael Brouwerijhttp://deprael.nl/Brewpub. Fantastic range of craft beers. Can get pretty packed. had some beers here on my last trip that were absolutely yummy!
Cafe Belgiquehttp://cafe-belgique.nl/tiny Belgian beer pub
Molly Maloneshttps://www.facebook.com/pages/Molly-Malones-Amsterdam/293030997411277t'Arendsnesthttp://www.arendsnest.nl/awesome dutch brewpub. great bar, great helpful barstaff, loads of interesting beers. wifi. has a "brother" pub called:
Beer Templehttp://www.beertemple.nl/awesome. 100s of beers. no sport. no wankers.
Cafe The Mindshttp://www.theminds.nl/something totally different. punk rock bar that plays LOUD punk rock and is full of punks and hipsters. open late. great atmosphere. love this place. but then i'm a tattooed punk rocker.
In t'Aepjenhttp://www.yelp.co.uk/biz/in-t-aepjen-amsterdamvery old and awesome little dutch pub at the top of Zeedijk. can be full of locals. i like this pub, but always feel uncomfortable in here - like being a tourist means i shouldn't go here.
De Sluyswachthttp://www.sluyswacht.nl/this place is fab, if you can get a seat, outside especially if the weather is nice. its a way off Nieuwmarkt, just opposite the Rembrandt House, and is a small WONKY pub next to a lock on the canal. nice place to hang out.
has been done up recently - does food and some great beers.
Cafe Stoperahttp://www.yelp.co.uk/biz/caf%C3%A9-stopera-amsterdam-2Cafe Hoppehttp://www.cafehoppe.com/great location down at the end of Spui. if you can get a seat outside, its a great place to pass the time having a beer watching the cute girls on bikes ride by.
its actually two buildings - think the right side is the pub, and the left is the cafe.
De Brabantse Aaphttp://www.debrabantseaap.nl/another Spui pub. this used to be De Beiaard. same deal as De Bekeerde Suster. I have no idea why the name changed, as they still do the same beer and food. although they have changed the names of their own-brewed beer for some reason.
Cafe Gollemhttp://cafegollem.nl/?page_id=14One of the pioneering specialist beer bars in Amsterdam and still a fantastic place to visit.
Was closed for a few years due to licensing problems but reopened late last year.
A 10 minute walk from the RLD, south of Dam, in a small street between Spuistraat and Singel.
Het Elfde Gebodhttp://www.het-elfde-gebod.nl/A small, cosy and very friendly bar right at the beginning of Zeedijk just round the corner
from the Barbizon Palace. Frequented mainly by locals, it has a small but interesting selection of beers.
De Zottehttp://www.dezotte.nl/#HomeAnother good beer bar, a little off the beaten track down near the Leidseplein. Gets busy at peak times but well worth the effort of finding it. couldn't see the jukebox, but they were playing decent alternative music at a conversational volume. kinda reminds me of a classic old dutch brown cafe, but does a good selection of beer, is populated by young groovy people, and has a cute punky barlady.
Cafe De Spuythttp://www.despuyt.nl/another "off-Leidseplein" bar.
Bierfabriekhttp://www.bierfabriek.com/home/An interesting new'ish brewpub, situated a couple of hundred yards past Cafe Nes on Nes, a few minutes walk from the RLD. There's also an entrance on Rokin.
It serves only 3 beers, a Dark Porter and a Red Ale (both brewed inhouse) and an unfiltered Pilsener.
Has big burlap sacks of free Peanuts, with people taking great delight in covering the floor in the discarded shells.
't Loosjehttp://www.loosje.nl/Situated right on Nieuwmarkt just a few doors down from De Bekeerde Suster, it has a decent selection of beers and is a good place to people watch.
another fave place, great to hang out at if the weather is good. does snacky cafe type food - if like me you can't take a massive breakfast, this is a great place for something quick to eat in the morning.
Cafe Soundgardenhttp://www.cafesoundgarden.nl/only been here a couple of times, due to it being a bit out of town (best way to get here is go down Rozengracht), but its a fab place. plays good (rock/alternative) loud music, has a great beer selection, is open late, and has a great, good-sized beer garden by the canal if the weather is good. not sure if they have TVs etc for sport, but they were showing the World Cup when i was here in 2010. has a pool table and a smoking room.
Cafe Chaoslocated at Looiersgracht 144, parallel to Marnixstraat, just past De Zotte (see above).
my latest fab amsterdam bar - tiny place, decent selection of beer, decent selection of snacks, great bar staff
l'Affichehttp://www.cafelaffiche.nl/another of my favourites, this is well off the beaten track, but thought i'd add it to the list cos i love it so much. its about 10 mins SW of Leidseplein on Jacob van Lennepstraat. I found this cafe because its not far from the tattooshop i go to. you get NO tourists in here, so were very surprised when i first appeared. I now can't come to Amsterdam without popping in for at least one beer.
its usually very quiet, but last visit (Nov 14) we went on a saturday afternoon - was busy, playing great music (old 60's ska), and had a great atmosphere. they only do cheese toasties for food. we sat here for a good three hours drinking and eating, was most pleasant, and the barstaff are great.
Hannekes Boomhttp://www.hannekesboom.nl/great in the summer. on an island opposite NEMO. loads of outdoor seating. good food, good selection of beer (if a little pedestrian). Never any tourists here, its a fantastic place to sit in the sun and drink, and enjoy the view.
