been meaning to do this for ages, and Coolwhips thread has prompted me into action. Maybe we can sticky this thread and hopefully one of the mods can helpfully keep it updated as people add things to it?

first of all, this site is very useful:
http://www.europeanbeerguide.net/pubs.htm

In De Wildeman
http://www.indewildeman.nl/
my fave pub in amsterdam. loads of beers on taps and bottled, they even have an iphone app so you can keep track of their cask ales. bar staff really great here too. pubs getting very popular these days, has wifi, and NO SPORT

Cafe De Stoof
http://www.destoofamsterdam.nl/
nice little pub in the RLD. if you sit in the front, or right at the back, you get a good view of some Kamers.
they show major football stuff in here, and sometimes the place is full of dutch football fans (who scare the shit out of me). there is a smoking (tobacco) room downstairs, and a cat. plays very cheesy music (usually).

The Pint
http://www.yelp.co.uk/biz/caf%C3%A9-bar-the-pint-amsterdam

Wynand Fockink
http://www.wynand-fockink.nl/en/home-en
Bluto says: " I love that place! Opened in 1679 according to their website and looks it. The staff are great and are happy to teach you all about the history of jenever (the predecessor to modern day gin), suggest various varieties to try, etc. One time when it wasn't too busy they took me in back for a private tour of the facilities. Just a great little place. Most of the booze is distilled right there on premises. If you're in the mood for something traditional, go for a kopstoot (headbutt), which is a shot of jenever with a beer (pilsener) chaser. They also have an extensive selection of schnapps. I recommend the citroen brandewijn (something a bit similar to limencello, but much nicer in my opinion.) It is only open from 3pm - 9pm. "

The Old Sailor
http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowUserReviews-g188590-d4071950-r161069201-The_Old_Sailor-Amsterdam_North_Holland_Province.html
i have mixed opinions on this place. its nice during the day during the week (its quiet, has nice views of the canal and Molensteeg!), but a bit mental in the evenings and weekends. or when theres football on.
doesn't have a sit down toilet, so don't go here if you need a poo.

Excalibur
http://www.excaliburcafe.nl/
biker/hells angel/metal-rock pub - great if you like loud music and mad movies on the TV. has pool tables upstairs.

De Bekeerde Suster
http://www.debekeerdesuster.nl/
brew their own beers (which are great) and does amazing pub food. ask any ignatzmice members who have come here. highly recommend this place.

Cafe De Engelbewaarder
http://www.cafe-de-engelbewaarder.nl/
just south of Nieuwmarkt, alongside the canal. Does a great range of different beers and has a couple of outdoor areas. and Wifi. Considering where this pub is, i find it to be very quiet and friendly and out of the way of tourists. a local bar in the centre of amsterdam? maybe.

Cafe Remember
https://www.facebook.com/CafeRemember
used to be Ignatzmice central, due to the fact you can smoke in the back. however has gone downhill in the last couple of years since the barstaff changed over. used to be staffed by a couple of hot girls that played excellent music on the jukebox. now its all sports screens and obnoxious dance music, and usually full of wankers. if thats your thing, come here on a weekend evening, its mental. has wifi. has a cat.

Cafe Pleinzicht
can't find a URL, know nothing about this place.

Torenzicht
http://www.torenzicht.com/

De Prael Brouwerij
http://deprael.nl/
Brewpub. Fantastic range of craft beers. Can get pretty packed. had some beers here on my last trip that were absolutely yummy!

Cafe Belgique
http://cafe-belgique.nl/
tiny Belgian beer pub

Molly Malones
https://www.facebook.com/pages/Molly-Malones-Amsterdam/293030997411277

t'Arendsnest
http://www.arendsnest.nl/
awesome dutch brewpub. great bar, great helpful barstaff, loads of interesting beers. wifi. has a "brother" pub called:

Beer Temple
http://www.beertemple.nl/
awesome. 100s of beers. no sport. no wankers.

Cafe The Minds
http://www.theminds.nl/
something totally different. punk rock bar that plays LOUD punk rock and is full of punks and hipsters. open late. great atmosphere. love this place. but then i'm a tattooed punk rocker.

In t'Aepjen
http://www.yelp.co.uk/biz/in-t-aepjen-amsterdam
very old and awesome little dutch pub at the top of Zeedijk. can be full of locals. i like this pub, but always feel uncomfortable in here - like being a tourist means i shouldn't go here.

De Sluyswacht
http://www.sluyswacht.nl/
this place is fab, if you can get a seat, outside especially if the weather is nice. its a way off Nieuwmarkt, just opposite the Rembrandt House, and is a small WONKY pub next to a lock on the canal. nice place to hang out.
has been done up recently - does food and some great beers.

Cafe Stopera
http://www.yelp.co.uk/biz/caf%C3%A9-stopera-amsterdam-2

Cafe Hoppe
http://www.cafehoppe.com/
great location down at the end of Spui. if you can get a seat outside, its a great place to pass the time having a beer watching the cute girls on bikes ride by.
its actually two buildings - think the right side is the pub, and the left is the cafe.

De Brabantse Aap
http://www.debrabantseaap.nl/
another Spui pub. this used to be De Beiaard. same deal as De Bekeerde Suster. I have no idea why the name changed, as they still do the same beer and food. although they have changed the names of their own-brewed beer for some reason.

Cafe Gollem
http://cafegollem.nl/?page_id=14
One of the pioneering specialist beer bars in Amsterdam and still a fantastic place to visit.
Was closed for a few years due to licensing problems but reopened late last year.
A 10 minute walk from the RLD, south of Dam, in a small street between Spuistraat and Singel.

Het Elfde Gebod
http://www.het-elfde-gebod.nl/
A small, cosy and very friendly bar right at the beginning of Zeedijk just round the corner
from the Barbizon Palace. Frequented mainly by locals, it has a small but interesting selection of beers.

De Zotte
http://www.dezotte.nl/#Home
Another good beer bar, a little off the beaten track down near the Leidseplein. Gets busy at peak times but well worth the effort of finding it. couldn't see the jukebox, but they were playing decent alternative music at a conversational volume. kinda reminds me of a classic old dutch brown cafe, but does a good selection of beer, is populated by young groovy people, and has a cute punky barlady.

Cafe De Spuyt
http://www.despuyt.nl/
another "off-Leidseplein" bar.

Bierfabriek
http://www.bierfabriek.com/home/
An interesting new'ish brewpub, situated a couple of hundred yards past Cafe Nes on Nes, a few minutes walk from the RLD. There's also an entrance on Rokin.
It serves only 3 beers, a Dark Porter and a Red Ale (both brewed inhouse) and an unfiltered Pilsener.
Has big burlap sacks of free Peanuts, with people taking great delight in covering the floor in the discarded shells.

't Loosje
http://www.loosje.nl/
Situated right on Nieuwmarkt just a few doors down from De Bekeerde Suster, it has a decent selection of beers and is a good place to people watch.
another fave place, great to hang out at if the weather is good. does snacky cafe type food - if like me you can't take a massive breakfast, this is a great place for something quick to eat in the morning.

Cafe Soundgarden
http://www.cafesoundgarden.nl/
only been here a couple of times, due to it being a bit out of town (best way to get here is go down Rozengracht), but its a fab place. plays good (rock/alternative) loud music, has a great beer selection, is open late, and has a great, good-sized beer garden by the canal if the weather is good. not sure if they have TVs etc for sport, but they were showing the World Cup when i was here in 2010. has a pool table and a smoking room.

Cafe Chaos
located at Looiersgracht 144, parallel to Marnixstraat, just past De Zotte (see above).
my latest fab amsterdam bar - tiny place, decent selection of beer, decent selection of snacks, great bar staff

l'Affiche
http://www.cafelaffiche.nl/
another of my favourites, this is well off the beaten track, but thought i'd add it to the list cos i love it so much. its about 10 mins SW of Leidseplein on Jacob van Lennepstraat. I found this cafe because its not far from the tattooshop i go to. you get NO tourists in here, so were very surprised when i first appeared. I now can't come to Amsterdam without popping in for at least one beer.
its usually very quiet, but last visit (Nov 14) we went on a saturday afternoon - was busy, playing great music (old 60's ska), and had a great atmosphere. they only do cheese toasties for food. we sat here for a good three hours drinking and eating, was most pleasant, and the barstaff are great.

Hannekes Boom
http://www.hannekesboom.nl/
great in the summer. on an island opposite NEMO. loads of outdoor seating. good food, good selection of beer (if a little pedestrian). Never any tourists here, its a fantastic place to sit in the sun and drink, and enjoy the view.

I can confirm Excalibur has 2 pool tables, and they got them up there through the window on that pulley thing they have on the building (like most of the canal houses have in AMS).
And yes you can smoke up stairs (weed also), but if you ask nicely you can smoke downstairs but only if you're a regular :P

Cheers!

Hi,

May I add another location in which I like to stay for some time, relaxing place, especially during afternoon. I don't like the other woman who serves, a short brown hair woman in her sixties, kind of pity she's so haughty, but the other one, the blond girl (in the same age approximatively) is far more friendly and she welcomes me with a big grin each time she sees me.

The place is Cafe Stopera, not too far from Nieuwmarkt, it is actually located in Nieuwe Oogstraat, the place where there are those coloured buildings in yellow, brown, green and blue.

In Cafe Stopera, you can find a large choice of teas, there are beers, and of course food. They cook a very good pancake (nature or with erable sirop).

Lots of local guys in there.

I've been to Cafe Pleinzicht mainly during day, the staff was friendly enough to make me come more than once. I drank a coffee, was good.

Generally I appreciate the fact the staff in coffees doesn't bother you if you want to go to the toilet without drinking anything, just in case of emergency (it happened with relatives who needed to go the the bathroom, we just asked and didn't hear anyone saying "No way man !" but a "No problem"). So the two or three times it happened as we found it cool, we got a drink and cheered the staff for his friendliness.

I appreciate previous posters views but I have always enjoyed a beer (or coffee) and a smoke in Stones Cafe and the table at the back. Like many other bars in the area time of day and day of week can change the atmosphere and noise level. Sport with no sound usually on the two screens. Have never eaten in here but have seen others tucking into breakfasts (with a precise number of baked beans lol). Likely to visit again especially as my favourite Warmoestraat coffeeshop (36) has now closed

Susies Saloon has a happy hour at 4.30 and is a decent place

I used to like the Black Tiger Bar but they got fined so you have to smoke on the steps now, damn shame...

Excalibur has to be my favourite. The guy that owns/runs it is excellent. Always make sure I have a pint or two there whilst in the dam and if it's quiet and you request a 'decent' band, they end up putting on about half an album for you!

A great thread and high time we had this as a sticky! The whole beer, pub and bar culture is one of the main reasons which has brought me back to Amsterdam at least twice a year for the past 25 years or so.

tonymunch's initial list and the other subsequent mentions have covered many of my favourites, but I've added few that I feel are worthy of inclusion.

Cafe Gollem
http://cafegollem.nl/?page_id=14

Keep up the great work, I'd love to find a few new (to me) recommendations for my next trip in December!

How do you mean? A separate forum? A link off the main page?

Thanks for adding those bars channelsurfer - ill add them to the main list.
T'Loosje is another of my go-to bars - totally forgot to mention it, so thanks for the reminder!

Greenie, thanks mate, I appreciate that.

EDIT - added channelsurfers pubs to the list, and added Soundgarden.

Not a great selection of beers, the usual suspects.

But nice safe irish pub , family owned. Great food and has a nice mix of locals and tourists.

No wankers !

A dutch friend of mine took me here last week. Very impressive list of beer. The awning outside says:

Belgisch Bierproeflokaal and two upside down beer glasses

Great list tony. All my favourites covered except Wynand Fockink if that counts as a pub/bar.

Re Pleinzicht I'm surprised you haven't stepped in for re-fueling between sessions. Good little bar. Sells De Koninck and plays some good heavy blues. Charismatic barman.

Cheers,

HC
