I'd be interested to know about this as well. I'm a huge mixology guy, and I don't really drink beer, so it'd be right up my alley. Thus far, all I've really found as far as cocktail bars are touristy spots that sell sugary drinks and shots.

It's good to know about that "Tales and Spirits" place, I'll try that on my visit later this month. Quote: Thus far, all I've really found as far as cocktail bars are touristy spots that sell sugary drinks and shots. LOL, I've not had much success with ordering cocktails in most places, although some of the touristy places like Coco's in Rembrantplein aren't too bad, especially if you order during cocktail happy hour..... not great quality, but then you're not paying too much either. It might be the closest you'll get to a Tiki bar, drinking not-so-great cocktails in an Australian Outback-themed pub.... ;) For somewhere that does good quality cocktails, there is a cocktail bar at the American Hotel (Leidseplein) which I thought was really good. More of a low-key cocktail lounge than a buzzing bar (probably there would be outside seating too in the summer), but you do have someone mixing the cocktails who actually appears to know what they're doing. The Champagne cocktails were really good (about €15 each when I went a couple of years back) but it does seem like you're getting a decent shot of everything in it, as I did feel quite merry after a couple of them... Another place I got a decent cocktail was at the "House of Bols" Genever Experience place opposite the Van Gogh museum. It's a decent little tourist attraction if you've nothing better to do (or it's pissing down with rain like the day I went) with the bonus of a proper cocktail of your choice at the end, prepared in the proper Tom Cruise style with chilled glasses and shakers and all that jazz. One drink was included in the ticket, but I think you could have another for €5 which seemed a bit of a bargain. I remember thinking I would love a bar that sold cocktails as good as this for €5 each! I'll try this "Tales and Spirits" place anyway. It sometimes feels a bit boring to drink overpriced beer.... at least with a decent cocktail you know it would be a bit of a faff to try to recreate it at home.

Yeah, I mean there's tons of places around De Wallen where you can get 5 jagerbombs for €20 or a jack and coke or whatever, but it's pretty obvious who they're catering to. Like I said, mixology is a bit of a passion of mine, I do have professional-level training and I can make some pretty amazing cocktails on my own, so my standards are pretty high.
This Tales & Spirits place could be good. I'll have to give it a look. I am a bit spoiled when it comes to bars, one of the very few things they do well here in Toronto is mixology bars.

The bar in the Arts'otel, 2nd floor right across the street from Centraal Staton, is really nice. I've had more than a few great cocktails there, but you pay hotel bar prices. Cool vibe, very relaxed. Modern decor, good size.
Also like the bar at the Pritzker. No more than 30 seats, very old-school clubby decor. Great drinks, quality bartender.
Both bars are great places to meet and chat up my favorite escort....

I visited that Tales and Spirits cocktail bar last week, an excellent little place with some fun, unusual cocktails (cocktail menu is on the website; the actual physical menu is a bit of a work of art with some cool pictures inside). The Zombie was quite spectacular...... €15 might seem a bit steep but in terms of alcohol content it did feel like I'd drunk one of those "9 shots for €15" type deals somewhere a lot more boring.... quite strange to feel a sudden "hit" from the alcohol, like a drug taking effect. Similar to the Zombie is a cocktail called "La Muerta" on the menu but it had a very strange aftertaste of barbecue sauce for some reason, and was less.....pyrotechical. The view out the window is looking straight down Oude Nieuwstraat at the red lights, must be quite atmospheric at night. Thanks to Dam_Obsessed for the tip....
