Hi all,

I got back from a quick trip to Amsterdam, had myself a great time as always. I extended my trip one day, and wow did I wish I did NOT do that. The last day of my trip was day one of a horde of English hooligans literally TOOK OVER the city, as there was an England v Netherlands soccer match that weekend.

They were so rude and basically fighting, throwing up, chanting, shoving people, banging on windows, throwing bottles, throwing bikes in the canals, and throwing beer and water at poor unsuspecting tour boats just trying to go under a bridge.

On my last night I was caught in the thick of it, saying bye to a bartender friend on OZA, and as I was leaving, I was caught in this surge of hooligans marching their way down. Two guys shoulder tackled me and one guy took a swing. And then ten feet away there was a ROW OF RIOT COPS with shields, batons and armor, and just knocking down anyone in their way as they pushed the mass of people down to where they wanted them. They were totally in the right and doing their job, those hooligans were mad people, but being in the crossfire had they reached me I'd have been blasted by their batons and shoved to the ground too!

It's so crazy how one day the atmosphere of the city changed, and was overtaken. It was such a shame yet reminded me of how safe and nice Amsterdam is usually. Needless to say, I was glad to be gone before the actual soccer match took place, and I highly doubt the Netherlands will host another friendly between the the two for a very long time. Hooligans are dangerous people!

As a Brit who loves football I have always been ashamed of the so called fans (Neanderthals that are complete oxygen thieves) that should receive lifetime bans and have their passports taken away so that their cancerous behaviour is not able to be exported to wonderful cities like Amsterdam. I am all for the local police using extreme force on these scum but as correctly pointed out if you are innocently caught up in it then the batons can come down on you as well. For the scum that cause this mayhem if they were walking down the canals on their own they wouldn’t say boo to a goose....cowards the lot of them.

Ahhh it's just a bit of fun XD pissed up tribalism at it's finest, I'm sure it will be very different in Russia though lol!

I am an american, live in Saint Petersburg and will be working the World Cup. Their first 3 games are not in Mosocw or Saint Pete. Believe me, there is no way the police will let this get out of hand. If they want to play with the locals go for it. Russians are professional street fighters and they love to fight. Bring it on tough guys, your trip home will be through the hospital, if you manage to make it that far.

I wonder if the Brits decide not to go to Russia as fans will they perhaps return to Amsterdam and cause havoc part 2.

It's a shame for the genuine fan , but its the idiots who get the press.
But then they all poses brains and a level of education and yet find it amusing to act they way they do.
It's all a massive laugh till the authorities decide enough is enough .
I hope the hooligans find what they've looking for in Russia and receive a dam fine beating off their like minded hooligans and there police ... especially as us Brits are not exactly flavour of the month over there.
