I cancelled a booking at the Hotel Quentin England due to reviews and mainly felt relief, but also a little regret as I was looking forward to a trip.

So I kept an eye on flights and offers on accommodations and spotted a deal for an apartment for three nights in de Jordaan for £56 (€63).

Sensing a good deal,I pounced. The owner has snce asked me to cancel because it should have been €660 but she made a mistake when entering it and then publishing it to the site.

However,I have been charged and received confirmation of the booking. The site is mediating and I await a response.

As far as I believe, I have a contract for a certain level of accommodation for three nights at the agreed, charged and confirmed rate.

Anyone have similar experiences or thoughts to share on this?

Cheers.

It happened to me a few years ago. I booked and paid for an apartment in the center of Milan via booking.com for ~€200 for two nights, which was really cheap for Milan. I received confirmation of the booking and payment. The first hint of a mistake was seeing that the money had been transferred back into my account a couple days later on my online bank statement.

I contacted booking.com and the owner to ask what was going on. They explained that the pricing was an error and it should've been ~€900; the owner asked if I still wanted to book at the correct price. Needless to say, I declined and looked elsewhere.

IANAL, but I doubt you're going to get the apartment for €63 if the price was supposed to be €660, and I think it's even less likely if the owner is Dutch.

The only thing to be careful of is cancellation fees; make sure you don't get charged for cancellation if they're requesting you to do it. The apartment I booked had a cancellation fee, but it wasn't a problem for me since the money had already been transferred back to me and there was no way the owner or website could get at it again. That might vary depending on the payment method and which website you used, however.

Thanks for the advice, mate.

It was actually booking.com.

I called to say that I've already made arrangements, taking time off work booking flights and have been paid and received confirmation. I emphasised that I did not wish to cancel. I also have not been reimbursed.

The representative on the phone agreed with me that if the owner wasn't going to honour the booking, I should be guaranteedt accommodation at the same standard and rate for those dates. To be honest, I'd be reasonable and accept a decent standard of hotel not far from the centre.

I'll chase it up today, with special urgency as today is the deadline for cancellation. Although, if I don't cancel, I wouldn't expect not to be fully reimbursed and indeed receive some form of compensation for the inconvenience.

Hey,

I didn't want to bore everyone with every little twist and turn in what became a saga.

So, I go the apartment for £56 (€63.40) for three nights in de Jordaan.

I received confirmation and payment was completed.

I then get a message from the own asking me to cancel as it was a mistake.

I then get an email from the site, asking if I wanted to cancel because the owner said I'd asked to cancel, which I though was a bit dishonest.

So I clarified with the site and told the owner.

Then things got really confused.

The owner said it was €660 for three nights, but the site said it was €160 for the stay but the owner would accept €125 for the stay.

I agreed to pay the balance, then was told that it wasn't €125 for the stay, as I had been told, but per night. I said that wasn't acceptable, even though I accepted it was good value, because this was now a second breach of agreement. There was a bit of toing and froing with no movement.

So this morning I received an email saying that they were sorry for the confusion and would give me it for €125 in total for the whole stay, due to their repeated errors. This still involved a complication of how the owner would be paid by the site and whether they'd agree to it, which meant more delay.

That would have been ideal, apart from the fact that the passing of time and continued uncertainty made me book a non-refundable hotel of the standard I was aiming for.

So had I not blinked I would have had an apartment in de Jordaan for 3 nights for €125 total. However, as well as my refund, I'm getting €75 compensation. So, it's kind of like winning a football match 3-2, but after you were winning 3-0 at half time.

De Jordaan apartment would have been about £9 cheaper, but I'm still getting a good deal, and I slightly prefer the area the hotel is in for access to entertainments.
