There was a thread a while back about people always having a wee smoke at 4.20.
I have good news, according to the digital part of this Church clock the time is always 4.20pm in Amsterdam.

Does anybody recognise the building?

Word, Muntplein, believe it was built in 1620 but hell, its just a few paces away from Rokerij's treats and a post smoke pancake at the pannenkokenhuis nearby...

To borrow a phrase, "420 everyday..."

ps. just noticed the "schwarma" sign in the foreground...perhaps this post should be merged witth the other....

The munt, or mint, was once part of the cities gates "Reguliersgate" (b. 1480), the gates burned down, the tower survived, and in 1620 it was given a new top---including its clock and bells. It served briefly as the Holland mint in an adjoining building (1672).

The name 'munt' stuck.

1620, (which appears on the tower underneath the clock to proclaim the date of its remodeling) in the 24 hr time system used throughout Western Europe, is 4.20.

Cheers Axxx, an encyclopedic knowledge of Amsterdam, you have! Thanks for the factoid.

Along the lines of the old city gates and walls, I read recently that the two main 'drags' of the RLD, Voorburgwal and Achterburgwal, when translated mean before-the-castle-wall and after-the-castle-wall. Like most mideival cities, I suppose Amsterdam was walled-in as protection against hostile forces...brigands and perhaps, pirate-types. You can still probably find them nursing biertjes late night on the Zeedijk ;-)
