I have a 3-4 a year habit, usually solo. When discussing holiday destinations with friends Amsterdam doesn’t get a look in. If I propose it I get the usual (good-natured) mickey taking about the RLD. They’ve all been to Amsterdam (and enjoyed it) at least once so it’s not a case of ignorance.

When I remind them of the canals, architecture, people, restaurants, coffeeshops, bars, museums etc. the response is usually to the effect that most of these things can be found in other cities around the world so why return to somewhere so oft-visited rather than seek out new destinations.

Which got me thinking, am I deluding myself as to the wonders of Amsterdam simply to justify my primary reasons, namely the RLD and increasingly recently, the coffeeshops?

Which begs the question, “would I keep returning to Amsterdam if the aforementioned where no longer available?” I’ve actually been asked that question before and taken umbrage but if I’m honest maybe my friends are right?

Anyone think similar?

The main reason i go to amsterdam is for the red light district , i can have sex with attractive woman , without the strings, i think amsterdam is a great city , i love the attitude and the canals , but i am under no illusion , that the red light has been the main attraction.
I always go on my own as my freinds are the type that walk round rhe red light but never indulge , so i whould say they dont get it.

I can kind of relate having just booked trip #10 to The Dam. In that time I could have done every major European city on the same cheap flight deals, but haven't felt the urge to. I do get the questions from mates, but turn it back to them. I have no issue with my best mate going to Cornwall every summer. I play football with blokes who only go to Turkey. Another who's a wine buff can't understand me having my weekends away smoking, yet he'd love to go wine tasting. Same diff if you ask me.

It's not just the RLD and the weed - both of which I can get at home - it's more the vibe I guess. That said, every time I go, I ensure that I see something different. Next time it will be (at least) the zoo. Different strokes for different folks, no need to explain yourself at all.

For me the main attraction is the RLD, but not the only one. I don't even have much interest in the coffeshops. But I get up early each day I'm there, eager to get out and explore, to maximise another day in the city, or to travel around the country. So there's no temptation to lie in bed all day, waiting for the evening's RLD action. I'd still love Amsterdam without the RLD, but I guess there wouldn't be such an urge to visit there.

I do have a friend who is very conservative. She hates cigarette smoking, never mind weed. She is quite prudish, and gets embarrased by sex in conversations. But she loves Amsterdam. She knows that by avoiding a few streets there, she need never see girls in windows, and by walking past coffeeshops, need never inhale any smoke. She loves the city for everything else it has to offer, and in particular the people.

My name is Uberchef and I'm addicted to Amsterdam and all it has to offer.

Theres no use fighting it. At this point in my life, when I get that itch to visit the Dam, well, there's little that can come between me from booking it. To Gezzelig's point, although high quality grass and P4P is available in NYC, the thing that keeps me coming back is the unique manner in which thesedelights are served up....a hedonistic smorgasbord with a healthy dollop of European sensibility.

Amsterdam is a unique place...singular...this sort of liberal tolerant attitude can't be found anywhere else in the world, for certain. That said, Amsterdam has carved itself a special place in my heart and mind...a trip there has become a true escape from my everyday life, for better or worse. I can't say that escapism had a wholly positive effect on me, but regardless, the little devil on my shoulder is having a ball when he's on holiday in Amsterdam!

If for some reason, grass wasn't legal in Amsterdam and the RLD shut it's windows (hard to believe that would ever happen as the business of prostiution has been roaring since the 1300s in Amsterdam), I'd still come back but it's possible the frequency of my visitation would decrease markedly ;-)

May it never happen!

Uber,

You're preaching to the choir, baby!

I love this city, as so many on this board do, for exactly the reasons you so succinctly delineate. I've been singing the praises of Amsterdam to anyone who would listen, trying to impress upon them how versatile this city is and how it has many things for many people from all walks of life, from the most decadent, weed-blowing monger in the RLD, to those Christian kids that drag that huge wooden cross on wheels up and down the streets. Amsterdam's got it all baby and if some folks are too dense to pick up on what we're puttin' down, then f**k 'em. The damn place has got too many people anyway. Maybe we should quit trying to convert and leave the place for those of us who really appreciate it.

Iamsterdam and Iamstoned!
A'dam is always on my mind...

I still remember the first time i came to Amsterdam. My heart was going to blow... My eyes were looking the place like crazy.. I thought i was in heaven. A whole new city to explore. So much freedom in one place. A place to rest your soul. Nothing to worry. Nothing at all. I am addicted to Amsterdam, i am addicted to coffeeshops, i am addicted to RLD, i am addicted to cannals. i am addicted to shops, i am addicted to the culture of these people, i am addicted to this country. God blessed Holland that's for sure. My next trip arranged in February. Sometimes i think that i earn money only for my trip there. I think i am an Amsterdam Victim and i like it very much. If there is heaven i choose not to go and i choose to reborn in Amsterdam.

If truth be told, I wouldn't consider Amsterdam as a weekend destination for a single second if the RLD's didn't exist. The one thing that makes it so appealing to me is the simple fact that the girls are on display and window shopping plays a great part in each of the 18 or so trips I have made over the years, predominantly as a solo mongerer. Living in London makes it only about one hour away.

Possible contenders for its crown are Thailand, Cambodia and the Philippines, I would like to include certain places in Central & South America, but have yet to include those as I have yet to sample them, with the exception of Mexico (which was great). These all offer a real girlfriend experience and the ability to view before committing. However, Thailand can be a bit full-on offering less of a relaxing time with constant pestering.

I will be visiting Amsterdam/Alkmaar again soon and will visit nothing more than the RLD's. Having a relaxing walk around them taking in the views, until I find my perfect pair of legs and ass (check some of my trip reports to see what I mean).

England's, or more precisely, London's Soho walk-ups are a succession of one dissapointment after another, the escort trade does not offer the quicky I am after and doesn't appeal to me at all. I want quick and dirty ass and leg worship with a sexy stranger who I can see and consider/re-consider as a potential deliverer of my pleasure, with immediate results if I so choose.

I've just got a divorce from my possessive leggy Thai wife who is now back in her own country after 5 years. At last I can visit Holland and satisfy my needs without having to do the usual sneaking off shit which always tarnished the trip.

Freedom is a wonderful thing and Amsterdam offers it in abundance, whatever your personal reasons.

I am obviously in a very very big minority here as the primary reason i go to amsterdam is for the pubs and bars of the city. Were else can you go were it is, on looking around, 80% men and not feel like the place is gonna blow any minute.Even the Charlie boys arent a problem if you let them know your not interested. Dont get me wrong the RLD is an added bonus as is the coffeeshops but give me a night out in the dam any time. Its like disneyland for grown ups. Its got everything you want. And flights and hotels not costing much over £100 a weekend its not breaking the bank. Got back Sunday and missing it like mad. Just 122 days to go till May 19 Ahhh Happy Days.

I am addicted to Amsterdam & go over 4-5 times a year, as soon as i can home from one trip i am saving for the next one. My primary reason for going over is the coffeshops although i always the rld & get laid at least once on each trip. Although i do love the people, the culture, the canals etc if the coffeeshops & the rld were to close tomorrow i dont think i would go over for a good few years & i'm quite sure that most people that visit would be the same. I live in the Uk & i can pay a women in this country to have sex with me if i wish, the quality of hash that you get in this country for the most part is terrible & dangerous to your health as im sure most of you know, i don't touch hash in Glasgow now unless it's homemade icesolator which is starting to become more common but although i can get good grass in my home town i can not get the range of great grass & choice that i get in Amsterdam, so thats why i visit. Mabye im not addicted to Amsterdam, i just have a psycological addiction to THC after 18 years of constant smoking.

you are not in as much of a minority as you may think. RDL is a wonderful place but the real reason I go is for the pub/coffee shop atmosphere.

After I read the initial post I asked the question to several uninitiated friends concensus was that Amsterdam is a must place to visit

Like Milfhunter I would not bother with Adam if it was not for the RLD. These days after having visited the place umpteen times I hardly ever go back, but will visit again at some stage purely because I am a hobbyist and having it all laid (hehe) out in front of you is an experience. Even though the quality of the sex is not as good as London escorting.

Amsterdam is a nice city and the people have a freer attitude than some Europeans, but without the RLD I would not have bothered re-visiting after having spent two days there on my first trip as a student 18 years ago.

Probably a lot of your friends prefer somewhere with a better climate for vacations. I would if I lived in England.

Amsterdam is also pretty expensive.

Anyway, you can only see the cultural items like the museums or Ann Frank house so many times. You can drink pretty much anywhere in the world, if that is your thing. You can get better sex in many places.

So that leaves us with the coffee houses, which you won´t find elsewhere.

Don´t get me wrong. Amsterdam is a nice destination, but it isn´t for everyone. At this moment I am writing from an Internet cafe in the Dominican Republic and have just come from a nice swim at the beach. For the same air fare at this time of year I could be in Amsterdam, but I would not even think about it.

I quite like this city.
Handy having an airport with 3 times a day flights straight to Schipol about 40 minutes away as well (and Schipol is the only place I've seen that sells M&M tubes with figures on for years now, though at €4.50? not overly cheap)
Don't smoke so there's no appeal in ever using the Coffee shops, although I would perhaps try a space cake or similar out of curiosity.
I did find the RLD a little tacky to be honest and as I've mentioned before, I don't feel right about going up to a Kamer, let alone coming out of one onto a busy street!

Still, do like the canals, and plenty of museums etc to see......you do need more than a weekend to see everything, and I'm sure things are much nicer during the summer months.
Plenty of delightful Dutch girls on bikes too :)

It really depends on what you're after. I prefer to see things rather than lounge around in the sun on a beach for a week or too, and Amsterdam isn't overly far from other European cities should you wish to branch out a bit - but I'm sure the same thing can be said about other places and it's nice to see many places rather than visiting the same place time and time again as it does broaden your horizons. Having said that, I've been to New York a few times, and still haven't seen the Flat Iron building, Bronz Zoo, Intrepid, Coney Island etc - there's always something new or different to see and do.

My wife and I go to Amsterdam for the moral but not stupid attitude . The sense of freedom and adult fun. We have many friends here in Houston that are so conservative that will not even say the word Amsterdam , not know ing that the city is culterally an incredible city. We have been to the beach vacations US and abroad fun but not for us . The newest thing seems to be Las Vegas turning more to the adult customer........We don't smoke we have played with the girls in the RLD , visited the Lifestyle clubs always go outside the city and explore fine day trips. . All I can say as long as we continue to have a good time in Amsterdam without being threatened with any violence or Neo conservative attitudes we will continue our twice a year teips to Amsterdam .....BY the way three other couples have tried the trip with us and all are at least making one trip a year. .

Excellent feedback. Thanks all.

And I still remember your trip report. One of the most enthusiastic I’ve read. Brought a smile to my face.
