Actually quite interesting...I'm a bit of a recreational cartologist --meaning of course that I love maps--and Amsterdam's city plan makes for a great map to look at whilst having a smoke, thinking about what you'll do when you finally get there...I digress!
My true follow-up to your post, ABC, is a question regarding the Night Buses. Where, at Dam Square, can one pick up the nachlijn buses? I've not yet ridden one.
If anyone can help shed some light on this, please do!
Dank u wel,

I read recently that one of the tram line #'s (I think it was 8, but being a smoker, who knows) was discontinued in the 70's because that was the tram that undercover Gestapo preyed upon to arrest many Jews during the Nazi occupation.

For sure, the 20 line has been discontinued. It used to run a circle around the main canal belts and Centraal Station stopping at major sites etc. Noone used to ride it!

of course almost all night buses leave from Centraal Station but just like the trams they split up immediately with the night buses that serve the 4, 9, 16, 24, and 25 tram line areas going down Damrak with the first stop just North of the square near a McDonalds. The 1, 2, 5, 13, 17 tram line areas are served by nightbuses that travel down NZ Voorburgwal like the 1, 2, and 5 but I'm not sure where the nearest stop to Dam Square is but I know they turn West (right) on Raadhuisstraat (toward Anne Frank House) on a roundabout way to Leidseplein.
