Those of you able to get on the site today may have noticed it's rather slow. There's an ongoing distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack against the server at the moment. I've done what I can to mitigate it but it's coming from too many different IP ranges to completely stop it.

Not really sure what we did to deserve this but, this too shall pass. Assholes.

I see there are still issues today. Someone really has nothing better to do. I've taken some additional steps to mitigate this, which seem to be helping for now.

I'm a member of several older style message board forums like this one, and three of them including yours have had this exactly problem with DDoS attacks. The other two have now gone behind Cloudflare that it got so bad.

I've tried researching into why these botnets are attacking "old" websites like this, and what they are trying to achieve, but other than figures on DDoS attacks rising each year, I've not had much luck.

Either way, hope it stops.

Well, the worst of it started about a year ago and continued for several months. They seem to have moved on for the most part for now, though, based on the "users online" number, I still think there's some minor fuckery afoot here. In any case, if I have to put the site behind Cloudflare eventually then that's what I'll do. There's a free tier that offers some limited protection I guess, never tried it.
