hi mate nice post. If you're driving, you should defo do an FKK. Never done it myself bu I heard that FKK GT is one of the good ones near the border.

Alkmaar is supposed to be good and cheaper than Amsterdam, RLD-wise.

You can learn bits of the language from tapes and stuff, I saw a good phonetic phrase book in the airport bookshop once.

Haha, Amnesia. guess he didn't wanna shag the girl you can see from this coffeeshop. I don't think she's a looker though - has anyone here shagged her?

sexfarms

you refer to the decade-old WSG posts about "sex farms near the Belgian border"? real or not, I can't tell you, but it sounds awfully Spinal Tap-ish to me

Quote:
Working on a sex farm
Hosing down your barn door
Bothering you livestock
They know what I need

Working up a hot sweat
Crouching in your pea patch
Plowing through your beanfield
Planting my seed

Sex farm woman, I'll be your hired hand
Sex farm woman, I'll let my offer stand
Sex farm woman, don't you hear my tractor rumbling by?

the search engine will help you with the rest of your questions. as for learning Dutch, your effort will most likely be appreciated unless it's abominable, in which case you are likely to annoy the other person by not using a viable form of communication -- I wouldn't necessarily expect anyone to humour you with a free lesson if you could both more easily do business in your native language. by all means try, but an appreciation of your own language is a good place to start, mate (not m8).

As for the language, you're probably best just sticking with dank u wel, tot ziens and other similar everyday words rather than delving into Dutch as you need to hear the sounds to even begin to imitate them.

Smokley...you got that right. I grew up listening to Dutch but unfortunately my parents didn't speak Dutch to us kids... Just to each other and to the other Dutch people that we were around. I've heard recently that it was very common at the time that my parents immigrated. Not happy with it...but not much I can do about it now. ..but I digress!

What I was getting at was the trouble with trying to imitate the sounds of the Dutch language. Even having heard it much of my life (and only using it occasionally) I still struggle with getting the R's and G's to move from the front of my tongue to the back. ...and I really had to practice on my gezellig just so they wouldn't snicker at me ;-)

Razzy,

you mentioned that you may be heading to Groningen in an earlier post - I think it still has a Tippelzone. Or at least it did have when I last visited the city late in 2006.

When I drove past the Tippelzone, some construction was happening there, but it looked like it was just renovation work. It's in an industrial zone a couple of miles outside the city to the East and just off the A7 motorway. The simplest way to find it is to look up the location of the Bastion Groningen Hotel (www.bastion.nl) just off the A7, drive to the hotel entrance, then imagine your're exiting the hotel car park and turning left, follow the road in this direction for about half a mile and the Tippelzone will be on your left hidden by tall hedges. You will see some lamp-posts behind the hedges and might also be able to see the tops of some structures that look like bus shelters.

and she wrang back again asking where he/we were and b4 anyone says she was working my mate asked how it works does he pay her etc and she said no she is a single business woman who travels to hotels for weekends for fun ?!?!

I suspect you won't get lucky at the Bastion Groningen, Razzy. It's usually full of burly van drivers and reps, due to it's industrial location. That's fairly typical of many of the Bastion hotels outside of city centres incidentally. This one also gets very busy during the week for the same reason, so it's worth booking at least a couple of days in advance if you want to stay there.

If you want to keep your plans fluid and not book hotels too far in advance of arrival, there is also a Van der Valk motel a few miles further east on the A7, it's bigger than the Bastion and less likely to be full, (and I think that the restaurants in Valk hotels are much better than Bastion). I go up to Groningen and Drenthe three or four times a year, I normally don't make advance bookings for hotel rooms, and I've never been unable to find somewhere to sleep - thanks to the magic of Sat-Nav. By the way, as you're interested in sex farms then I'd say that Sat-Nav is very desirable, they're usually in out-of-the-way locations. There's a few to the east and south of Groningen.

As you'll be driving, try to plan your route so that you cross the Afsluitdijk, it's not often you get a chance to tell folks that you've driven across a 26km long dam. Crossing the Afsluitdijk will also take you very close to Leeuwarden (which has to be a bonus!). You could easily drive from Amsterdam to Groningen via Alkmaar, Afsluitdijk, and Leeuwarden in the time you've got.

It's been many years since I visited a sex-farm Razzy. (I've reached an age where the onset of what we might call performance issues makes me feel that I can get better value for money by spending my Euro's on a decent meal, instead of retail sex.)

They are not farms of course. Typically they are a large property, usually set well away from residential areas, on the edge of a town or village. They're usually completely surrounded by tall hedges or trees with discreet off-street parking inside the hedges. This can make it difficult to spot them from the road, especially as there will often be no name signs. After you've seen a few of them, you'll start to recognise the type of property. They're really tough to locate at night if you're not familiar with the location. Some have low-level red/purple exterior lighting that you might see glowing though the trees, but you can't rely on this.

Inside they're pretty much like a sex-club in Amsterdam or Prague. At minimum, there will be a little bar, where you will be introduced to the ladies, you will make your choice, and she will take you to a private room to transact your business. The rest depends on the ambitions of the proprietor, who may have installed a sauna, jacuzzi, swimming pool, etc.

The only place I've visited up in the north was a place called the Casa Grande, just outside a village called Gieterveen, about 15 minutes drive to the East of Assen and 20 to 30 minutes South-East of Groningen. That was about 10 years ago, so I can't say if it is any good now, but it is still there, I've seen the lights at night when driving past on the N33. (It's literally a couple of minutes from the Gieterveen exit on the N33.) They had a major fire there a few years ago, so it is probably very different now, but definitely still operating.

The more I think about it, the more I think you'll need a Sat-Nav if you decide to head into this sort territory at night. It's far too easy to get lost in the little villages where street lighting and signage may be minimal. You should also bear in mind that you'll be fairly close to the German border. If you get lost, you can easily end up on the German side of the border, so make sure you are not carrying any illicit substances in case the German police are stopping and checking cars for this as they cross the border. (Germans driving while under the influence is a significant cause of traffic accidents in border areas. If you are caught, they will not be lenient.)

On a related subject, it would be worth checking what insurance cover your rental car will have if you cross the border. If you're involved in an accident, it would be a nasty shock to find out that it's been down-graded to third-party cover outside of the Netherlands. Finally, I don't want to leave you with the impression that the Bastion and Van der Valk are your only hotel choices in Groningen, there are lots of hotels in the city centre and more in surrounding towns and villages.

In Groningen try the 'de woeste hoeve' And a sat-nav will help find it, even though it is viewable from the A7.

It's a shame that Welsh doesn't come with capital letters and punctuation. It must be very difficult to read.
