i absolutely detest the experience but i never let it stop me going from A to B. my first flight was to amsterdam, back in 2010. i've done longer flights now as well (thailand) but it's definitely not a form of travel that i enjoy.
it is definitely the lack of control that gets me - like your life is totally out of your hands. which is ridiculous, because everytime you get into a car, bus or train it is exactly the same.

I hate flying, not because I'm afraid, but because we suck at it. You'd think after all this time, we'd be able to find a way to make flying not horrible, but seemingly we have not.
You go to the airport, submit yourself to silly, invasive security that doesn't actually do anything, then get herded onto a plane like cattle and crammed in like sardines. Often, you get little kids or people with screaming babies. It's like being stuck in a slum in Calcutta for several hours. And for the privilidge of being subjected to this bullshit, you get to pay thousands of dollars, plus be subjected to all sorts of extra fees if your bags are too heavy or some shit.
KLM is about the best airline I've ever flown, but even with them, the experience is less than pleasant. I fly first class when I can, which alleviates some of the discomfort, I'm a tall guy, so I likes my leg room, but that's often not feasible. I would never fly if I had the choice, but coming from Canada, it's not really very viable to get to Amsterdam any other way.

I have a bad fear of heights but flying does not bother me too bad. Mostly it is just uncomfortable. I kind of view it like swimming in the ocean. Yea I am not too scared of sharks and the likelyhood is low but man oh man will it suck if it happens to me. I am an athiest and I think once you die the computer gets shut off . In that sense death does not scare me but dying does i.e. Being shredded by a shark or plummeting from 30,000 feet.

Without going in to too much detail i work in the airline industry and if anyone has any questions that would ease their nerves at all I would be happy to help.

I had a strict aerofobia for more than 7 years in the past. I guess it had many reasons - something from the childhood, as long as modern accidents also effected me... So I travelled by trains. From very far eastern Europe to Paris, Amsterdam, even Madrid... It took up to 3 days one way)) It's not like travelling from London to Amsterdam via Paris in a few hours)) I knew I should change something in my life, cause I love travelling and with trains only, my options are very limited. So after about a year of inner prepairation I managed to step on board of the plane (with few failed attemps before - tickets and money lost)). It was very mportant to make a first step. Now I fly over 90 segments per year. I realize that the more you fly - the easier it is. Even now I feel nervious sometimes... when it's long-lasting turbulence, or when passengers around me close all the windows)) But then I can think of going for more than 40 hours to Amsterdam from my place for example instead of 3 hours flight - I realize that those nerves are the minority. I guess it's in a human nature to feel nervious when being in unusual conditions. It's not about real safety, which level is extremely high nowadays. So my advice is - don't get your nerves too serious and have a nice flight!))

Fly as much as you can and often it will go away. At least some of the anxiety. That did it for me. And I thought about all the fun I just had, and that I would miss the opportunity sitting at home being afraid of it. Still don't like flying but skipping the Amsterdam trips is now not an option. Next I will also be trying other fun places. Amsterdam in the middle of december was a rough last 10 minutes before landing. 25 meters pr. second winds. Rollercoaster ride from hell, but the captain landed smooth like a champ. KLM is the best.
