Went Eurostar last time and that was a nightmare. Thank god I'm only 30 minutes from Harwich, much better to get there early in the morning after a good nights sleep on the ferry.

I get the feeling that this is only temporary?

otherwise one can imagine things getting worse during late june / july / aug when most people travel?

6h waiting at them moment
https://thepointsguy.com/news/avoided-a ... rt-queues/

CNN - "Mayhem predicted for travel this summer"
https://edition.cnn.com/travel/article/ ... index.html

seems to be like this allover the world, not just Shiphol ..? scandinavia for an example.

thinking about booking with shit airlines like Ryan Air just to get out of the larger airports. they often fly to smaller ones on the countryside... however Im not sure if this idea is any better or not....

I flew in this weekend.
I heard all the horror stories, and was prepared to suffer.
I went through customs, and had my bags in 10 minutes!
Granted, the Chicago flight arrived at the crack of dawn, and we were one of the first flights in that morning,
but it was the BEST experience I have ever had at Schiphol.
Go figure.

Great to hear your smooth arrival experience at Schipol! Certainly, arriving at the crack of dawn must help. The busiest time at Schipol is 'mornings' and early afternoon - i would guess 7am - 10am would be peak:

Also, from the news it appears that departing Schipol is more of a problem with queues, as opposed to arrivals.

I have historically arrived at Schipol 90 minutes before my departing flight to England, and made it through security with plenty of time to spare. However, this summer I'm going to arrive 3 hours before my flight. This is far from ideal as it means i lose 90 minutes of my last day, but it seems crazy to only allow 90 minutes now even for a short-haul flight.

I don't think arrivals were ever a problem, also had zero issues on Friday. Flying back today, let's see how bad the departure is.

Ok, this looks pretty fucking bad. Line for security starts well outside of terminal building. 2 hours at least, probably close to 3.

Upd - 1.5 hous to get through security. Only have hand luggage, but check-in is probably another hour on top.

Thanks for the update pal. Not the scary stuff being reported earlier but 1.5 hours is a really long wait. However, I'm guessing the evening departure queues would be worse than the morning ones and possibly longer than 1.5 hours at the moment.

Just returned from Amsterdam, was due to go out last Saturday, KLM informed me on Thursday last week that my flight was cancelled, I fly from Southampton, the alternate flight they gave me was via Spain leaving 8 hrs earlier than original flight, I did take it as didn't want to cancel trip.

Went through passport control in Spain, & arrived in Schiphol 40 minutes after my original arrival time. 5 hours flying and 4 hours transfer time instead of an hour flight not ideal.

Walked out of Amsterdam central train station 40 minutes after landing, so that all went well.

Returned home today, arrived at Schiphol at lunch time 4 hours before my flight, maximum time allowed, they check boarding pass before allowing you upstairs to security, was through security 35 mins after arrival at airport, have to admit it was busier than I've seen previously, but non of the horror stories I've read.

Another successful visit.

I flew out Sunday.
1230 flight to Chicago.
Arrived at 730, and it wasn't too bad, but worse than normal.
By 830 the airport was chaos.
Took 90 minutes to get my bags checked.
You can't get in the security line unless you are within 4 hours of departure.
It took 2 hours to get through security and passport control.
You can forget about getting breakfast, unless you are willing to wait 45-60 minutes.
Grab and go an apple and juice is about the only thing I had time for.
With all this shit going on, only about a third of the terminals to check bags had staff, and security and passport control were about half staffed. And the staff they had were PAINFULLY slow.
If I was a cynic, I might suggest that this looks like a bunch of union workers trying to fuck things up as part of pay negotiations.

thanks for the info weasel!

I just booked with shitty Ryan Air to an airport on the countryside in belgium, 80min away from amsterdam with train just to get rid of the stress.

however it seems like its not just that bad anymore according to your info? well 2-3h = bad yes, but not 7-8h two weeks ago.

Ive booked a last minute trip arriving on Sunday. Surprisingly managed to get a half decent hotel in the centre for a reasonable rate - Sunday nights have always been a bit cheaper in my experience.

I'm nervous about my departing flight being cancelled, I'm nervous about time to clear passport control when arriving, and I'm nervous about the whole returning process (flight + airport queues). Fingers crossed all will be ok!

Will update you all on queuing times.

Which airport is that ? Zaventim to Amsterdam is 2 hours by Thalys, and Charleroi is more than 3 hours.
