Mokum was a name given to Amsterdam by Ashkenazi Jews from Eastern Europe. The name Mokum stems, via Yiddish, from the Hebrew word makom, which means "place, location".

Amsterdam slang actually has a lot of words derived from Jiddish.
For instance: "temeier" stems from the Jiddish word for "unclean". Guess what it means?

totally fascinating the origin of the name
how great is it that after all the dreadful things the nazis did to the jews in amsterdam and holland - that a Jewish word triumphs and has a lasting palce in Amsterdam. Karma!!!
and how cool and fitting for amsterdam is that its nickname tincludes the word "kum"!!!!

That old asshole Hitler is probably fuming in whatever hell he ended up in, because just a few minutes ago a tourist boat full of Jews just went by, filling the air on Prinsengracht with the tune "Hava Nagila".
