I think a fair few people in the UK now wear white trainers so I wouldn't regard it as an entirely American thing although perhaps it does endear itself to a stereotype of Americans.
Personally, I usually wear black Reeboks (just bought myself a new pair for my upcoming trip) simply because white sneakers wouldn't really fit in with my dress style. Most often I'll be wearing blue/black jeans, red/navy/black t-shirt/sports jersey, a baseball cap and a blue denim or black leather jacket depending on how cold it is. I probably do look like a typical English tourist myself (least of all because my preferred cap is a red one with an England badge on it).

in europe now the tendency is to have fashion sneakers
in the sense that these are sneakers made to walk around and not for playing any type of sport
it does not have to be discussed the effect of well dressed men on women
rld girls are no different and they appreciate clients with style and who take good care of themselves
so if you want them to make an extra effort then you have to make it too

As a Yank, I try to do "as in Rome" and wear comfy black shoes (many are now more comfortable than sneakers!) and comfy black, casual pants. Not a big deal. Just that we're not exactly loved in the world community right now, and wearing white sneakers screams out "American Tourist," most of whom are assumed to have a lot of money and be "ugly."

alelover45,
it is not just the white sneakers. In cities that get a lot of tourists, the locals just become incredibly good at picking out the subtle and not so subtle clues that indicate you are a stranger in town. Especially when they earn their bread and butter from you.

right!
sneakers are a passion of mine...i could go as far as to say i have an obsession...there is nothing wrong and never will be anything wrong with fresh white nike airs!...EVER! haha opening up my wardrobe to be faced with a perfectly catalogued wall of trainers is a beautiful thing to see each morning (other than waking up outside a kamer in goldbergsteeg) and theres nothing nicer than slipping on a fresh pair of vibrant white Nikes!...beautiful!
anyway...thats my strange obsession spoken about briefly....cheers for listening!
