The following might interest smokers travelling to Tobago, one half of the Trinidad and Tobago republic.

As you might expect, weed is as prevalent here as elsewhere in the Caribbean. This said, it is considered to be as nefarious as hard drugs in the eyes of the Tobagonian police, which means that it is smoked - and sold - with great care.

All of the stuff I smoked, bought from four different suppliers, was your unadulterated bush weed. It looks and smells completely different from what you'll find in, say, and Amsterdam coffee shop, and is considerably weaker. It will come complete with stalks, seeds and, by the looks of the stuff, several other types of vegetation. However, I really enjoyed the gentle high, which seemed to go so well with the sea, sunsets and laid-back vibe of the islands. It was also very good for sex, which leads me to think that most of it is sativa-based, although I could be wrong.

Beach hustlers might offer you weed on the beach, although this practice is less common than in more touristed islands such as Jamaica or Barbados. One of the most convenient places to score is the huts selling souvenirs at Store Bay Beach. Look, as always, for the rastafarian stalls. The problem with Store Bay is that this is where a lot of tourists hang out, so I imagine that there is more chance of getting caught than if you approach random people toking discreetly in quieter parts of the island. This was my favourite method of finding weed and it can work quite well provided that you can convince your potential supplier that you are not a cop.

The going rate for enough weed to make a joint (probably about half a gram, but, as I say, the stuff is weak, so you need a lot to make a decent joint) is 10 T&T dollars, which works at arouns US$1.50.

Happy travels!
