Yup, if the Dollar keeps falling like this, then pretty soon tourists from all over the world will come to the US to fuck $2000/hour pornstars.....that'll be cheaper than a 50 Euro S/F in the RLD....

I already have my eyes on a couple of them....;-)

Similar to the USD I have been watching my valuable pound note, a premium amongst currencies, become the equivalent of the European lira. It is depressing to watch my the FX rates eachh day looking at the tourist rate fall day by day as the bad news roll in.

All the wondrous trips that I have planned for this year will cost that much more in a tighter monetary environment. Shame.

Regards

It's bloody typical that it all happens now and I'm flying out Friday. Seriously, anyone know of some cheap bars, preferably tourist friendly and in walking distance of the Rembrandtplien?

When I was a little nipper, the British pound was routinely valued at $2.50. These things tend to go in cycles. I was speaking with an economics professor, who assured me that in the coming months the pendulum will begin to swing back the other way. At current levels the weak dollar isn't good for Europe either, not if they hope to export goods and services to the US. So, what you will see is European central banks buying up dollars, and interest rates creeping back up in the US. The result will move the two currencies closer to parity. It won't be like the golden age of the guilder for us Americans, but it will be better. Unfortunately, it won't happen by the end of April when I return.

I'm not the drinker I once was, but I liked the "Water Hole" in the Leidseplein (down the street Boom Chicago is on). Long happy hours with pints of Heineken for E2.50, and a more "local" vibe. I don't remember leaving the place last time I was there! Ollie Bollen (sp) cart is only 20 meters away (depending on the time of year)!

Difference between the upcoming depression and the 1930's US depression is that there will be a run on the dollar rather than a run on the banks.

I am feeling the pain of a weak dollar too as I will be taking an expensive month long trip to Europe in May 2008.

The equity portion of my portfolio is flushing down the toilet which is causing me stress on a daily basis. Hold and pray on this.

On positive note my real estate investment in Las Vegas doubled in 3 years. I exchanged it with a 1031 exchange into two properties in Austin and Albuquerque at just the right time to avoid getting buried in the overpriced Las Vegas market. Both properties are 100% paid off so no short sale for me.

On another positive note I have had a fair portion of my portfolio in gold over the past year which is up about 50%. This works as a nice hedge against a weak dollar.

This has created pain and misery for many people in the US. I know several people who bought real estate at the top of the market and recently lost their jobs. One of them told me her next stop was as a bag lady on skid row. What a nightmare.

Well, hopefully things will stabilize in the second half of the year.

Slashing interest rates and letting the dollar plunge through the floor is a ploy by the US government, to enable them to use their gold and foreign currency reserves to pay off their staggering debt at a favorable rate. The sub-prime credit crunch is just a handy excuse.

We are probably going to cancel our next trip which is in September. The cost of things in Amsterdam and the depreciation of the US dollar is just out of hand. Damn do I miss the days of the Guilder. We have been to Amsterdam at least 15 times and love it as much as anyone on this forum. With the shrinking RLD and the currency issues, maybe it is time to try a place like Bangkok? We have a few more months to make our decision.

It just broke $1.59 to the euro. An all time low. Just in time for my trip.

Maybe its my imagination but everytime I visit (over the last few years) the Dollar hits a "All time" low. I cannot recall the last time I read something about the DollarĀ“s rebound against any currency. Last fall, I went to Canada when the Dollar hit a low against the Looney...

IMO, I predict the Euro will climb to $2.00 in the next year or two,, we will then think,, remember when it was only $1.69

A funny recolection from my November trip was when I was sitting across from the Heineken Brewery,, thinking to myself,, wow, here I am in Holland, paying almost $2 more per pint than I pay at my local bar in the states. Even the Gouda,, much cheaper in the USA (made in Holland)

Something is wrong with this picture,,, guess what, the girls are still much less expensive than taking an American girl out for ONE dinner/date!
