The Pound and the Euro. Just how wadded are you?

One for the UK guys, this.
Back to basics.
The best City of London estimates are that by 2009 the Euro will have parity with the UK Pound. Following that, the slickers are estimating that it is not impossible for the UK Pound to fall in value even further against the Euro. In other words, very soon the question will be not "How many Euros are there to the Pound?", but "How many Pounds are there to the Euro?"
Short-term (1-2 years), things do not look good.
And that's before taking into account the "cleaning-up" operation of the RLD, etc., due to start soon.
Never mind, it's nearly Christmas.

It seems new lows are hit very regularly now!! I've been watching for weeks wanting to change some up, it was at 1.25 just before i had the money and has plummeted since and sitting just above 1.10 with no sign of improvement. Looks like i'm pretty screwed for my next visit. Going to have a substantial amount of money less just based on the exchange rate.
Really gutted about this :-(

Quote: 1 Euro = 1.33 Dollar
Yeah, I'm still highly annoyed... it was around 1.26 when I was there less than 2 weeks ago! But still *much* better than what I paid over the summer...

Tell me about it!
I live on the border with the Irish republic and get a good rate with my work.
In the past 4 weeks we have dropped the exchange for staff from €1.50 down to €1,30 for the £
Massive difference for me although it is worse if you dont live on the N.Ireland border and work with both currencies day in day out.
So how much is the Batht worth today as I'm of to Pattaya in April ;)

I know my opinion is not going to be very popular here, but working in the Netherlands this exchange rate is doing wonders for paying back my British student loan! :D

The hotel for my Feb trip, booked already, appears to be getting more expensive with each passing day. I've already cut a night's stay out of my usual stopover to compensate for the expense. Just to do my bit to add to the doom and gloom on this thread; it looks like it might stay like this for years.

The immediate cause of the recent fall in the pound has been the interest rate differential against the euro. Brown dropped British central bank interest rates deeply and very quickly, while the ECB has been (as normal) more cautious. I'm not so sure the optimists amongst you are going to be happy, Trichet has already said that there will be no more euro interest rate cuts this year, and as long as euro rates are higher then (all other things being equal) the slide will continue. And of course at the moment Euroland looks to be economically stronger than Britain as well.
Interestingly enough a headline in today's German ARD (similiar to the BBC) web page reads:
"Briten diskutieren vorsichtig über Euro-Beitritt"
or
"British cautiously discuss euro membership"
Now when Brown actually does let such a debate become public it will get interesting!

One possible silver lining also - with people deciding not to travel so much, there may be some serious discounting on fares/ hotels etc. I've just noticed the flight I booked on BMIBaby is now going for £20 less than I paid for it a week ago. Bah!
