[Update: The DoS appears to have ended]


Our server is currently experiencing a significant DoS attack. It began last evening---Saturday. This is not directed at us in particular---it is affecting everyone using the same hosting company, whether the servers be colocated or dedicated.

"We’re currently investigating network issues causing intermittent connectivity problems. Dedicated servers, colocation and Shared hosting customers (Panelbox or Sebulba) may notice slowdowns or connectivity problems. Important DoS attacks directed to our network are currently causing slowdowns and instability depending on the route taken to reach our network. The attacks might also have affected DNS services. We are working on filtering the attacks and identifying and isolating the targets. We will post regular updates on the situation here."

A later bulletin:

"The network situation seems stable after applying filters and null routes. We are monitoring the network closely and will act quickly if new attacks or problems are detected. Thank you."

Things are still unsettled...the server was unreachable for a period this Sunday morning...

DoS = denial of service

Basically the bad guys blast so many bogus requests at the server that it is overloaded and cannot provide normal service for real users. They sometimes do this by first taking over ( via worms and trojans) 100's of innocient PCs. Then those PCs are used to simultaneously flood the target. As with spambots the actual owners of the PCs may not even realize their computers are part of the attack.
