Today I visited Alkmaar for the first time. I have heard great things about this place for the last 5 years but never visited. On hearing it will soon close, I could not pass up this chance.
Ticket from Central Station cost €12 for day return. I would be keen to know how to get it for €7 mentioned here earlier.
The train journey is a fairly peaceful 30 minutes or so. I went at about 5pm and it was bloody hot today in Amsterdam/Alkmaar. Nice journey and you can see a lot of cows in the fields!
I had no map but had viewed Google Maps earlier. I knew that you basically walk East out of the station, meander around a turn and next to the big canal, and then further inland is the Achterdam.
So I got to the canal and figured I would cut inland diagonally and find Achterdam no problem. There are a lot of nice shops in the middle of Alkmaar, I'm sure women would love this place. You could leave the girlfriend to shop while you check out the RLD :D
