From Let's Go-Amsterdam. See bold selection below.
An important "authoritative" statement is being made---and it is completely uninformed crap---! One of those preconceived notions based on "foreign" preconceptions designed to satisfy those prejudices and preconceptions. In this case american-style, obviously. We wonder if the authors of this turkey have actually spent more than a tourist-clogged Saturday night or so here---or actually know any Dutch men.

Red Light District
The Red Light District (bordered by Warmoesstraat to the west, Zeedijk to the north, Damstraat to the south, and Kloveniersburgwaal to the east) has existed since the 13th century. It was then that Amsterdam began its life as a seat of maritime trade. And with the inevitable comings and goings of so many lonely (and increasingly wealthy) men, the "world's oldest profession" took its roots in the city. Today, however, the Dutch themselves avoid the area like the plague; it has become overrun with tourists. Sneak a peek at all the tantalizing and titillating thrills that the Red Light District has in store, but be advised that if you decide to eat, shop, or smoke up between Warmoesstraat and Oudezijds Acterburgwal, you'll be paying twice the price for half the value. Bring an open mind, but leave your wallet at home.
