Not to ruin anyones party mood or anything, but It's that time of year again. It's time for the yearly display of human tragedy and catastrophy known as the World Press Photo Exhibition. It's been a very rewarding year for photojournalists in terms of human catastrophy and tragedy, so expect loads of entertainment.

This year the WPP observes its 50th anniversary, and examples of award winning photojournalism from the past 50 yrs are on exhibit in a special gallery.

a former colleague of mine, working for AP, actually won a prize in the 2002 exhibition for a photo of Yaser Arafat.

I visted it last year when I was in Amsterdam and I shall do so next month. Aside from the the war photos and the like, one of the most disturbing was a 14 year old boy from Texas who weighed 140 kg. He was so obese he was on a ventilator. Its a shame there are no links to last year's photos on the site.
