Unlike a lot of members here I am not into smoking but do appreciate a good beer or 3 and not the usual Heinekin or Amstel you get in the vast majority of Amsterdam bars.

Can anyone give me information on bars similar to In De Wildeman or cafe Belgique?

Many thanks

I like Cafe Hoppe which is located at the end of Spuistraat by Amsterdam University. Good old fashioned brown cafe frequented by the literary crowd. They also make their own genever.

Thanks for the information guys and thanks to dom for taking the time to note all those web site for me! I have been to several of those bars and particularly like In de Wildeman and Wynand - if you have never been to the latter it is worth a visit but note it is only open between 3 and 9 pm!

I will be trying Cafe Gollem this time as I have heard of it in the past but never made it!

Caffe Hoppe and Cafe Zwart on Spui are great places to sit outside when the sun is shining and watch the world go by!

Thaipan, Until recently In De Wildeman was my favourite bar in Amsterdam, and a close second behind the Clachan on Paisley Road West to be my all time favourite . However last time I was over I "discovered" the Arendsnest on Herengracht. I now reckon it to be better than both of the above.

The Clachan eh? I have not ventured down Paisley Rd West for some time, I feel an expedition coming on! ;-)

Thanks for the info on Arendsnest, it is on my "must visit" list.
