In spite of our perception that the Netherlands and Amsterdam in particular are a bastion of secular freedoms you may be surprised to find that there is a dutch "bible belt"

The following is what a friend of mine (Amsterdam resident) wrote regarding Staphorst:
There are more places like Staphorst: for instance Bunschoten, Spakenburg
and Huizen. Although the last one is not so strict as the first three. My
uncle lives in Huizen. He's still surprised that everything (and I mean
everything) is closed on sunday. Most of his life he lived in Weesp (nearby
Amsterdam), so he wasn't used that even the pubs, movietheaters etc. are
closed on sunday.... and don't try to hang your fresh washed clothes in the
garden to dry at sunday. There's a big chance that the neighbour will come
to you and say something about it...
I'm glad I live in Amsterdam!
