Just returned again from Amsterdam, and sampled the new herrings again at a couple of places.I remember thinking that the prices seemed expensive....

What should be a fair price at herring stands??

I bought a bowlful at a supermarket yesterday in England the equivalent of 2 Euros.Im sure the Ams prices were higher, and the content smaller.Could it be that herrings cost a lot less in the UK???

These days the yearly "new herring" (fresh) is brought ashore - prices of a "new herring" can be stiff at 2,50 or 3 euro's at a herring stand. The "old" herring can go (has to be sold out now) for 1,85 or so. Sure, it's expensive , the days that a new herring was bloody expensive at 2,5 guilders is not that long ago ......

Here in Nieuwe Amsterdam, I just had an amazing herring for $6.95 USD each.

Delicious, and dear....but the quality and freshness certainly merited such a price tag, especially since the fish is flown in from Schveningen (I probably murdered that spelling) daily.

I ate mine....and then another for good measure!

After all, as Wim says, it's good for the production.

Tot ziens!
