What camera was that taken with anyway? All my similar night shots are totally blurred.

Nikon D200, handheld.
Otherwise, use a tripod ;-)

Hand held?! I'm impressed. The D200 is sweet, but a good camera doesn't necessarily make a good photo. Did you use an image stabilizing lens?

I guess the wide angle helped quite a bit. Did you use one of your older lenses or did you get a lens along with the D200 body?

I've got the D70. I'm not yet impressed with the image quality. When I blow up images, the detail that I'm accustomed to with film just isn't there. And the highlights block up really bad. I just ordered the Capture 4 software to see if I can do better by processing the 12 bit NEF file.

Nice pic

Dogs: The lens? My old Nikon Nikkor 28mm f/2.8 AI-s workhorse...and holding still ;-) ISO was cranked up alot, needless to say. All others I'll be posting, or have posted already are done with my little pocket camera---Canon IXUS 50, and now IXUS 750. I don't lug the big Nikon around usually. I had used a D100 since they came out, and it was a very fine camera---no complaints---but I prefer the much larger LCD screens that are now available. The Nikon and the IXUS 750 both have 2.5" screens.

Starr: Improvising camera support is all part of the fun...lampposts, railings, utility boxes, etc. whatever is handy...but you can't mind dinging up your camera...;-)

Tripod tip #36...

Use a lamp. Remove the shade and the screw fits perfectly into the camera to hold it securely in place.

Auston,

I have been into photography for over 40 years and I have to admit that I've never heard that one before. Great idea, especially at parties, where someone is already wearing the lampshade.

Hey Auston,

I am a professional photographer and I have never heard quite as good idea as the "Lamp Pod" What a great "Mcgyver" move. I will be sharing this idea with many. Just curious, are you located in Austin and do you shoot stock?

Peace,
Paraquat

Paraquat (and DogsAfire) –

Glad you found my tripod tip enlightening. Learned that trick many years ago from my older brother who was in the Peace Corps and did a lot of photography at the time. I’ve used it quite a bit at gatherings and parties over the years and when I do, everyone just shakes their heads in amusement.

Plus, it always leads directly to the shade being worn by the drunkard in the group, which is always a good thing.

And sorry, I’m not from Austin, I’m from the Detroit area. And yes, I do mean I’m sorry that I’m from Detroit!

Rock on...

- Auston
