On all my previous trips, I have basically given in to the munchies in an extremely unhealthy way, eating just about as badly as one can imagine. Do you all have any thoughts on where one can get at least the occasional healthy - dare I even say vegetarian? - meal in Amsterdam?

ha, u think u gave into your munchies badly, i was eating 6-7 meals a day when i was stoning, and that doesnt include all the chocolate bars and snacks

really does depend what u mean healthily, do u mean healthy in anyones books as in controled diet and nutrious foods or do u mean non fattening or do u just mean u want to avoid pizza and kebbabs extera dripping with fat

also will u have acess to a fridge, makes a big difference

if u have acess to a fridge id recomend stocking up on a few cereals, low fat yogurts and chees strings (they are 100% cheese, no added ingrediants) and fun healthy food like that,

if ur just talking about eating out, yeah sure, any decent resraunt should have decent food and id be gobsmacked if this restraunt ud consider decent didnt have anythiung vegatarian on the menu, as with all restraunts there will be fatty things to look out for, watch out for bread baskets, sauces on food and deserts, ask for plain chicked

im not the kind of guy who can give resteraunt recomendations but if ur just asking for general healthy tips amsterdam is the same as any other place in the world, try a health website not one like this for tips on food, most guys on this website who talk about eating normally have a different kind of menu on there mind

- Cafe Luxembourg - veg lasagne - very nice.
- November, Spuistraat - good (2 or 3 courses - 19.50/24.50) menu, with fish always on there. Normally also a healthy (fat free) desert.
- there are others. Go to Albert Heijn and buy some fresh fruit and wholemeal bread!

Not sure of the name of the place but next door to the American Bookstore on the Southern end of the Kalverstraat is an upscale cafeteria style resterant that offers a wide variety of selections. Some of the food such as salads and pasta are already prepared and some are prepared to your specification. Ample seating is upstairs and the price is reasonable for Amsterdam.

Bring along a Swiss Army knife and stop in at one of the local grocery stores.

It'll be much cheaper to make yourself a picnic lunch and you know what you
are eating is good for you (if you make the right choices).

As a vegetarian moondog (who likes to eat pussy): here are my tips:

In Amsterdam Centrum, there is a wholefood shop (natuurwinkel) called De Weegschaal, Jodenbreestraat 20, near Rembrantshuis. They have a take-away counter which is good for a quick snack. Green Planet restaurant, on Spuistraat, already mentioned is expensive.

By the Prinsengracht canal (Jordaan side) there is a place called De Bolhoed, which is the only vegetarian restaurant I've ever found open during the day. Prinsengracht 60.

Out of town, if you're checking out the Pijp RLD, then you can visit Amsterdam's best veggie establishment, which is near the Albert Kuyp Market

http://www.waaghals.nl/

Tram 16 will get you there. It only opens during the evening. Next door, at Frans Halstraat 27 is another good natuurwinkel called De Aanzet, which also has a take-away counter. It closes about the same time De Waaghaals opens.

Happy eating.

Moondog.

One more link for you (in Dutch), which I forgot to post yesterday:

http://restaurantgids.vegatopia.com/noo ... amsterdam/

It has locations and reviews of restaurants and cafes.

I also meant to mention that Green Planet, Spuistraat 122, is very close to the Singel RLD. There are some kamers on Spuistraat itself, but the last time I was in Amsterdam, last summer, these were mostly empty. Shame, on my first ever trip to Amsterdam I visited a nice Venezuelan lady there.

If you carry on along Spuistraat to no 100, you'll come across this shop, which is female owned and targeted at a female clientele (straight, lesbian and bi):

http://www.femaleandpartners.nl/english/film/index.htm

It does sell good quality DVDs, Andrew Blake girl/girl porn and the like at reasonable prices.

And this is one of the best places to buy booze, at Spuistraat 116:

http://www.lecellier.nl./

It has a very good range of wines and beers.

By far the best beershop in Amsterdam is this one another 10 -15 mins walk away in the direction of the Dam

http://www.debierkoning.nl/beta/index.p ... nfoUK.html

Hope that hasn't given you the munchies!

If you eat at De Waaghals (near the Pijp RLD) make sure you try some of the local booze from here:

http://www.brouwerijhetij.nl/eng/index.html

The brewery itself is quite a long way across town in an old windmill

If you have time for one day trip out of town, Alkmaar is definitely worth a visit - see other threads. Every town should have its own Achterdam.

Have a good holiday.

Moondog.

I just love all this talk of healthy eating. Hopefully it will mean the queues at KFC will be shorter this Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday!

Dang, moondog, that is one exhaustive list! Greatly appreciated - and I will explore as many of them as possible and report back here.
