I actually watched that for the first time last night and laughed my ass off. Besides the idiotic humor, the scenes in the Wallen and surrounding areas were fun to watch. The scene with the guys waiting in the RLD for servicing was hilarious,,, from midgets to English Soccer players,, not to mention the guys in Jisbeer robes :-) The director must have taken a day trip to PHG or Goldentime to get that idea???

Oceans 12 and Hostel are the most recent cameo Amsterdam films.

Hostel movie scenes were actually shot in Prague, and I was listening to the DVD commentry with Tarantino last week, and he said "Wow Eli (director) its amazing, cos I've been to Amsterdam loads of times, and I really thought that you had shot in Amsterdam, I couldnt tell the difference"

Well Mr Tarantino, the question is : did you venture outside your mega expensive hotel on any of your amsterdam trips?, cos i could tell straight away that it wasnt Amsterdam they filmed in.

There is a French Film called Bon Plan about five kids going backpacking around Europe:

http://www.amazon.fr/gp/product/B00005N ... 04?ie=UTF8

They start off in Amsterdam of course, staying in the Flying Pig, visit a coffeeshop, do the Van Gogh Museum and end up staying in a canal boat with some middle aged gay bloke.

They lose all their stuff in Germany before ending up in Greece.

No subtitles, but even if your French is only basic, you don't need them to get the jist of the story.

Oh and the real reason for buying is too see Ludivine Sagnier's lovely breasts betwen 'Water Drops' and 'Swimming Pool'. Check under L (not S):

Enjoy!

You can make a research on imdb.com to find all the movies or TV shows filmed on location in Amsterdam.

The only shot in Hostel that was real was at the beginning,, when they walked out of the Hostel.

Ocean 12's favorite joint...De Dampkring ---~

Wan King,

Not sure which hostel, never researched it to that degree but the scenery was much more like Amsterdam than Prague. The RLD scene was definitely a set, never seen anything like it in the Wallen.

Please check and advise :-)

For Amsterdam scenery I like Snapshots (2002) with Burt Reynolds, Carmen Chaplin, and Julie Christie.

Burt is a crusty old hippie used bookstore owner in the 'dam. Lots of centrum and RLD footage although some of the interior cabin scenes are on a set. Or else they boarded up Sexyland making it look like RLD cabines. A subplot has a shady real estate developer trying to get Burt to sell his store so the developer can convert the block into a sex superstore.

Tram footage, houseboat scenes, golden hearted hooker versus drunken louts, RLD stereotypes,- great scenery but only a so so movie. I'd call it a dramatic romantic comedy.

While on the subject of films, the second - and best - of Nicolas Freeling's 'Van der Valk' novels, 'Because of the Cats' was made into a film 'Niet voor de Poezen' (1973), with Sylvia 'Emmanuelle' Kristel, the queen of soft-focus soft-porn herself:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0069772/

The book is set in Amsterdam, Haarlem and a fictionalised version of Bloemendaal-an-Zee, which could be based on any of the coastal towns like Zandvoort. I'm wondering if anyone has seen it and if so, how much is set in the 'dam. I'm guessing it's not on DVD.

It has Bryan Marshall rather than Barry Foster as the Inspector.

My favourite is Amsterdamned. It's about a guy who comes out of the canals and murders people. Some if not all were prostitutes. There's some great views of the city including some shots from the air. It finishes with a speed boat chase through the canals.

Puppet On A Chain - based on the book of the same name by Alistair Maclean - a story about a police detective investigating heroin smuggling in Amsterdam.

It was filmed in Amsterdam and on the island of Marken (just north of Amsterdam in the Ijselmeer) in the 1970's. It's not the best film ever made, but if you can suspend your critical faculties a little it rattles along at a good old pace, and your persistance will be rewarded at the end by what is probably the best high-speed boat chase ever filmed, on the canals in Amsterdam. (I may just be biased because it takes place in Amsterdam though!)
