Taking joints back to the UK and getting caught.

I have been considering another trip to Amsterdam but this time going by car ferry, rather than my normal airport route. It occurs to me that this would be a much easier way to smuggle a few joints back to the UK ( I have never smuggled any on a flight - that sounds too risky to me, with a good chance of being caught.)
If I go ahead with this and I get caught at a port (Newcastle or Dover probably), what is the worst that is likely to happen to me? I would have at most six ready rolled joints in their little individual plastic containers, as bought in any of Amsterdam's weed/coffee shops. (I am not a smoker and only ever smoke joints in Amsterdam, and cannot myself roll a joint.)
Am I being naïve thinking that I would get only a moderate fine? Would I have to return to e.g. Dover to face a magistrate at a later date (I live up north)? Would I even risk a jail sentence? I saw a program on TV yesterday and they say that you can get 5 years just for possession. I have no criminal record.
I guess this must be a regular occurrence at airports and ports (people getting caught with small amounts of cannabis or marijuana, I mean). Can anyone pass comment?
Best Regards,
Des.

Probably, but by no means certainly, a caution.
However, ask yourself, for a paltry 6 joints is it worth the potential inconvenience and hassle if busted. Not sure why you want to do this given that you don't smoke back home. My 2p worth suggests forget it. If you want to smoke back home learn to roll, buy a rolling machine, find a friend to roll for you yada yada yada.
Your cost benefit analysis may vary. ;-)

One of my problems is that I don't know anyone who smokes joints, or even where they might be on sale in my home town. I would no doubt attract attention if I started making enquiries locally. I had a tough enough time getting any on the few occasions 40+ years ago when I was a student and knew a couple of pubs where cannabis/marijuana changed hands. I would stand out like a sore thumb now, but look less obvious as a well dressed smuggler.

Probably safer to grow your own, nothing big just a few plants for personal use, seeds used to be legal to buy in the UK not sure if they still are?

I don't recommend it. Even on the train back to Paris the rule between my mates and I is that we get rid of whatever we have. Border patrol with dogs come through on the train. People get stopped on the platform and searched.
If you do decide to take the risk, I would imagine looking inconspicuous is key. The police are more likely to start questioning a kid with a backpack coming off the boat from Amsterdam than a guy who looks like he's coming from a business conference (suit, on the phone, rolling suitcase).

Also even if caught, you may get away with a single spliff at the bottom of a jeans pocket in your luggage, several packaged and ready to go are a different matter, I know someone who got stopped at Manchester airport with a crumpled spliff in a coat pocket and was let off without as much as a caution

Ever thought about just putting in a package and mailing it to yourself from a fake address to your address but with a fake name? Even better, send it via DHL or something.
To increase the likelyhook of it arriving, send it from outside of Amsterdam.

Wrap it good in plastic and put it in your underwear, or buy one of those fake soda cans, or they have fake batteries, your only concern is the dogs. Based on my experience, the pre- rolled joints do not get me high, buy the raw product and a pipe.

Regarding mailing it to myself, I had previously assumed that would be a very risky method. However B's useful private post makes me think it might be a good way as, amongst other details, I could potentially avoid knowledge of, or links to the sender and recipient. Sending from outside of Amsterdam would reduce suspicion, but in all likelihood I will only be in the Amsterdam locality. I guess I'll firm up on my plans once I book my trip, but keep the very welcome comments coming, these are most useful. Getting back to one of my original questions, does anyone else have experience of being caught with small amounts at the UK entry point?

If UK customs uses dogs, I would not try to get it by them. Too risky. On the other hand, if it is random inspections, you are very unlikely to get caught unless you act nervous or reeks with smells. If you seal the bag and place it in something to mask the smell (i.e. coffee), they will not find it. Scanners wil not pick it up and unless they take apart everything, they will not find it. For a gram or two, I doubt if they will do much to a first time offender. Small amounts for personal use is still illegal, but it is not like the UK does not have a thriving MJ market. They are really concerned with dealers. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cannabis_ ... m#LegalityPossession under an ounce for personal use is a very minor problem. But beware you are crossing a border and they may consider it smuggling and you may also violate your duty to declare. They have bigger fish to fry than to go after a person with a few joints. Especially, since the growing is not enforced in certain counties.

I've just been reading a book on cannabis and they say that, even if you only get a caution from the UK police, you still retain a criminal record for life. Sufficient to stop getting a visa for the USA (not that I plan to ever go there again). More disturbingly however it can invalidate e.g. home insurance if you have a criminal record. I would also think that it might make getting car insurance impossible, and that would be a hell of a price to pay. Anyone know what the true story might be?

Back in the day, before MJ was legal in the USA (Medicinal) I would go to Alkmaar for the day and mail a package from their Post Office. 100% delivered without issue.

There is a huge thread on ACD site about posting weed back home to yourself. I would however, always go with the side of caution. As good as Amsterdam weed can be, is it worth all of the potential risks just to get it back home? For me, the answer is no, at least.
Apologies to admin if any of this is off limits.

Digging up an old thread abit here but in regards to home/car insurance that's aload of crap for a caution. Cautions and most non violent/sexual crimes also 'drop' off your record fairly quickly too, so they arent visible by anyone wishing to check via a DBS check.
