Things to know about Alkmaar

First of all, a round trip from Amsterdam to Alkmaar costs 11.70 euros, trains run until 1.00 am so you can take your time over there, it doesn't commit you to sleep in Alkmaar.

WARNING ! Purchase your ticket in the automatic selling machines, you can find them anywhere inside the Centraal Station, and even some them are outside, but NEVER purchase them at the desk ! The waiting time can last 40 minutes and the officers selling tickets are incompetent and mistake about the prices. I've been charged 31.70 instead of the normal price 11.70. I tried to claim for the 20 euros missing but since I paid in cash I have no evidence, so they denied it and refuse to pay me 20 euros back !

How to get there :

when you get out from the station, turn left as the railway is behind you, at the end of the street you border the main river for 10 minutes walk, pass over a casino called the strip. Turn right just before an Italian restaurant. The street is called Achterdam, and doesn't directly cut the river road Kanaalkade, so you have a lot of small alleys to cross before getting there. Anyway Achterdam and the main canal are in prependiculary directions

About the girls :

I found the girls to be as much attractive as in Amsterdam, and even more. They are also more friendly. The main advantages upon Amsterdam : it's not a rushed environment, so you feel no pressure about the time. And also the price 35 euros for 15 minutes. A lot of indoor alleys, and covered areas, you have the impression to loose yourself in a labyrinth full of gorgeous girls.

I've been with 3 girls :

1. Marina stunning Hungarian blonde of 22 years old,
2. Sandra Lituanian 19 years old, with dark hairs and blue eyes
3. Katarina from Greece early 20s

They can appreciate a relaxed atmosphere, and not be in competition with numerous tourists, so the girls are not in a hurry and never try to upsell you or to rip you off.

From now on, I decided : Alkmaar for the girls, Amsterdam for bars and parties :)

I see you told me in another thread that once you're in Amsterdam you can't leave, and you asked me how is the dayshift in Alkmaar, so I suggest that you are afraid to stay too late and miss your last train back to Amsterdam or be compelled to take hotels in different places, which is complicated for the organisation of your trip, don't get me wrong.

I understand you, I thought so before, but I can tell you, I've done the Yin Yang and Alkmaar same week end, and I did it all, while staying in Amsterdam for the night. You will see the nightshift in Alkmaar, trains run until 1.00 a.m, just don't worry about that.

Hi seeker,

I was in Alkmaar's RLD between 7 and 9 pm. In the winter at this time the night has already fallen. I prefer walking around RLD's at night, with colors and lights shining.

One thing I forgot to mention :

You won't get ripped off, or be asked 100 instead of 50 for some reason (top off, change position) like in Amsterdam where the competition between tourists drives the prices very high. However Alkmaar is famous for its cheese market, but I guess you don't go there for the cheese do you? :)

I've been there several times and have found a big difference between early and late shift.
All good just different.
It's also nice because it's more Dutch, cleaner and all round friendlier.

Is there much action going on if you get there for 12 Mid Day? Thats what time Im arriving but I dont want to walk round an empty RLD so will there be many working at around that time? or will it be dead?

If you do a tour around mid day you may well be disappointed and will probably leave you with a negative view of the RLD as it will be virtually deserted. The earliest time to visit would more likely be from 3pm onwards. The selection of ladies at this time is ok and would also give you a nice view of the RLD.
Even better would be to visit round about 8.30pm onwards as the selection of girls increases.
I would seriously recommend visiting Alkmaar during the evening as it is a lovely town and, as been mentioned by the original poster of this thread, the RLD is a much more relaxed place to visit compared to the main RLD in Amsterdam.
Oh and the last train back from Alkmaar to Amsterdam Centraal is usually at 12.15am from platform 5.

Thanks Farid, I will definitely check this out on next trip. Where I live in London it takes 2 hours to get from one side to the other so 30 minutes for less than a tube ticket is a steal!!!

I can't guarantee accurate information but I'll try to do my best to remember :

Marina Hungarian 22 years old, is 3rd or 4th window at left coming from the main river, when you walk the street from northside to southside. You can't miss it anyway, It's inside an indoor alley with only 2 windows at right.

And Sandra Lithuanian 19 years old dark hair blue eyes, is at the middle of the street, you will face a little courtyard, it's not in the courtyard, but the first window at left AFTER the courtyard.
